Former Indian World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev is confident that the current team would soon be able to end the ICC major trophy drought. India last won a big trophy back in 2013 under the leadership of MS Dhoni. However, since then the team hasn’t been able to cross the last hurdles in the big events. In fact, India lost the final of the 2014 World T20 against Sri Lanka and lost the semi-final of the 2015 World Cup against Australia.
Furthermore, they lost the semi-final of the 2016 World T20 against the West Indies. Subsequently, they could not go all the way in the 2017 Champions Trophy after losing to arch-rivals Pakistan. The team once again lost the 2019 World Cup semi-final against New Zealand.
Kapil Dev reckons the team has done well
In fact, the team has shown great form throughout these major tournaments but they have not able to win the crucial stages of the big matches, which has led to their downfall.
Kapil Dev reckons India hasn’t had the rub of the green on their side and they would soon be winning a big trophy. Three World Cups (two T20 World Cups and one 50-overs World Cup) are to be hosted in the next three years and Dev is optimistic that India will come out on top in the big events.
Kapil Dev said while talking to Sportskeeda, “Sometimes you need a stroke of luck also. Let’s see how good the Indian team is playing. I am a positive person, I don’t look at the negative side.”
“I have said these cricketers have done much better than what we imagined. Time will come when they will win trophies and they’ve done it also.”
“If you say they are the No.1 team on paper, yes, they haven’t won ICC trophies in the last 4-5 years but it will come. I have no doubt, they are a good enough team to handle the situation.”
The Indian team has got the players to win a major tournament and they have been a consistent side in the last decade. However, the results have been a bit disappointing if we take into account the big competitions.
India will need to handle the crunch situations with more confidence and they definitely can turn the tables. The T20 World Cup is the next major event and the Virat Kohli’s men would like to be at their best in the tourney.
