The 32-year-old Indian leg-spinner Karn Sharma recently praised the former Indian World Cup-winning captain, MS Dhoni, for his outstanding leadership quality, under whom he made his international debut.
Karn Sharma made his international debut in 2014 and played four international matches in that year (only Test, two ODIs and one T20I). But then, he has been faded away from international cricket.
Karn made his international debut during the 2014 Birmingham T20I under MS Dhoni’s captaincy (7th September 2014), where he dismissed the only English batsman Joe Root, which was also his second over in the international cricket. During that match, Dhoni gave him valuable advice when he went to bowling Root.
Karn told Yash Kashikar on his Instagram live show ‘Say Yash to Sports’, “I still remember when I made my T20 debut against England, he (Dhoni) told me ‘isko first ball googly daal’ (bowl a googly first up). I was new and Joe Root was batting. He said ‘Ye pakka tere ko reverse sweep maarega, to pehla ball googly daal’ (he will definitely play reverse sweep, so bowl a googly).”
Since 2018, Karn is serving for the IPL team Chennai Super Kings (CSK), where Dhoni is also leading the side. Once again, Karn gets a lot of valuable advice from the wicket-keeper in this team.
Karn claimed, “Even when we practice in Chennai, he gives a lot of valuable advice from behind the stumps. In fact, I have not seen a cricketer in my career who gives better feedback than MS Dhoni.”
For CSK, Karn has played seven matches, where he managed to pick up five wickets.
Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni are quite similar as captains: Karn Sharma
Karn also feels that Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni have very similar captaincy qualities as Rohit has learned a lot of the leadership skills from Dhoni. He played under Rohit’s captaincy in the IPL 2017 for Mumbai Indians (MI), where his side won that tournament and Karn managed to pick up 13 wickets in nine matches.
The leg-spinner added, “Rohit and MS Dhoni are quite similar as captains. I think Rohit has learned a lot from MS, since he has played for so many years under him. Both bring in calmness and give complete freedom to their bowlers for setting their own field. Only if it doesn’t work out, they will come up with another plan.”
Karn feels that a player can learn from Dhoni even without being a part of the playing XI. Talking about Dhoni’s biggest plus point as a captain, the leggie pointed out Dhoni’s cool and calm behaviour even in the tough situation of a game.
Karn said, “In fact, there is a lot to learn from Dhoni, whether you are a part of the XI or not. Most importantly, he remains cool and calm in crunch situations and doesn’t let the pressure mount on himself as well as the team.”
He further added, “I feel a team is dependent a lot on its captain because if he is under pressure, then it creates some doubt in the side. But that isn’t the case when Dhoni is around. He takes on challenges and deals with tough situations.”
