He Came To Hit Me With The Bat: Kiran More Shares Sledging Incident During India’s Tour Of Pakistan In 1989

Former wicketkeeper-batsman Kiran More, who has represented India in 49 Tests and 94 ODIs, has shared a sledging incident in the India tour of Pakistan in 1989. He labelled the verbal confrontation with Saleem Malik during that tour as hilarious though the Pakistani player came to hit him with the bat.

India and Pakistan being the arch-rivals, sledging becomes frequent between the two sides. But sometimes the verbal confrontation can take an ugly turn and similar happened between Kiran More and Malik.

More was provoking Malik who got frustrated and signalled to hit him with the bat. Although it looked a nasty gesture, the former Indian cricketer enjoyed the rift with his opposition. He wished that their conversation might have been recorded in microphones because it was hilarious.

“Whenever an India-Pakistan series takes place, sledging happens. In Pakistan when we went in 1989, I sledged Salim Malik in the Karachi Test and he came to hit me with the bat. I said to him a very nasty word in Punjabi because we speak the common language. Actually, it’s so much fun and I wish that there were microphones all around the ground because it will be hilarious for everyone,” Kiran More said on The Greatest Rivalry podcast.

More had also a famous encounter with Javed Miandad during the 1992 World Cup match where he annoyed the latter behind the wickets. He also shared his side of the story of the whole incident.

“So from the first ball, I started going after them. When Javed came in to bat, Aamer Sohail was batting along with him and they were doing pretty well actually, they had the game in hand. But I thought Javed was over-cautious, he stopped Aamer Sohail from getting into the flow and play big shots and that pressure was building up all the time,” Kiran More maintained.

After retiring from cricketers job, Kiran More was the chairman of the Selection Committee till 2006.
