India’s limited-overs batsman KL Rahul is on the cusp of overtaking Rohit Sharma’s record and could very well break it today, if he gets enough chance to bat in the third T20I against Bangladesh. In 30 T20Is so far, Rahul has scored 922 runs from 27 innings. Rohit Sharma, one of the two Indians to score 1000 runs in the shortest format, achieved the milestone in 40 innings. Rahul has all the time to go past his record.

Skipper Virat Kohli holds the record of being the quickest Indian batsman to score 1000 runs in T20Is. He achieved the milestone in 27 innings – in the first T20I of the series against South Africa in 2015 in Dharamsala. Rohit had reached 1000 T20I runs against Australia in Sydney.

While Rahul will not be able to break Kohli’s record in terms of innings, he will surely go past Kohli if we go by the time taken. Kohli had taken five years and 112 days to score 1000 runs while Rahul has already scored 922 runs in three years and five months – he made his T20I debut against Zimbabwe in 2016.

It remains to be seen whether 27-year-old will be able to overtake Kohli’s and Rohit’s record in the third T20I in Nagpur.

In the first T20I of the series, he was dismissed on 15 off 17 while in the second T20I, Rohit Sharma’s opening blitz meant he didn’t have much to do – Rahul scored 8* off 11.

If the Indian openers put up a great show, the middle-order batsmen might not get enough chance to bat, again. Given that Iyer has fixed his spot at the number four spot, Rahul’s wait to achieve the record might extend as he could also lose his spot in the playing XI when Kohli returns for the West Indies series.

The third and the final T20 of the series will be played in Nagpur today. If India win, they will extend their winning run at home while if Bangladesh win, it will be the first time they will win a T20I series against Men in Blue.
