The 45-year-old former Australian cricketer Michael Hussey recently talked about the different captaincy skills of the former Australian captains Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke, former Indian captain MS Dhoni and present Indian limited-overs vice-captain Rohit Sharma.
During his cricket career, Michael Hussey played under all these captains. While he played under the Aussie captains Ricky Ponting and Michael Clarke during his international career, Hussey played under MS Dhoni’s captaincy during his playing career for the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rohit Sharma’s captaincy during his service for the Mumbai Indians (MI). While Hussey served for the Australian team between 2004 and 2013, he played for the CSK from 2008 to 2013 and again returned to the team in 2015 season after spending the 2014 season for the MI.
Hussey claimed that all those four successful captains had different characters. Talking about the two-time World Cup-winning captain (2003 and 2007) Ponting, the former Aussie left-handed batsman pointed out his competitive nature and all-time supporting his players.
In a recent podcacst Hostpot with Chetan Narul, Hussey claimed, “They are all very different characters. Ricky Ponting was so competitive and led from the front and backed his players 100%. He wanted to win so badly and dragged the whole team along with him.”
Hussey feels that the 2015 World Cup-winning captain Clarke was a very tactical skipper who had the ability to utilise his players at the right time.
Mr. Cricket said, “I would say Michael Clarke was very tactical and very good brain on the cricket field, knew when to bowl certain bowlers and things like that.”
Michael Hussey about MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma’s captaincies
Talking about three-time IPL-winning captain and two-time Champions League T20-winning captain Dhoni, who also led the Indian team to win the ICC World T20 2007 and ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, Hussey praised his cool and clam brain along with supporting ability for his players.
Hussey added, “MSD… he has a great intuition for the game but he is also very calm and cool, backs his players enormously and shows a lot of faith in them.”
Later, Michael Hussey claimed that the four-time IPL-winning captain and one-time Champions League T20-winning captain Rohit is similar like Dhoni and tactically very well.
Hussey said, “Rohit was much the same. He is very calm under pressure and tactically very sound as well. All of them had this ability to take pressure off players and I think that was a good thing.”
