Mohammad Azharuddin Backs Rishabh Pant for the 2019 World Cup Campaign
Former Indian National Cricket Team skipper Mohammad Azharuddin wants to witness the exciting prospect Rishabh Pant in the national team’s 2019 World Cup squad.
When asked about his combination for the quadrennial event scheduled in England and Wales, Azharuddin stressed Pant should bat at number four.
“I think India should include Rishabh Pant in the playing XI and he should bat at the number 4 spot,” Azharuddin told Mid-day.
The 21-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh has performed quite well in the recent past. In particular, his emergence in the Test fold has become the talk of the town.
Room for improvement:
But Azharuddin believes Pant has a lot to prove. He remarked the gloveman has plenty to work on behind the stumps to leave an impact in the traditional format of the game.
“Rishabh Pant still needs to improve his wicket-keeping skills in the longer format of the game, where focus and concentration come in to play,” Azharuddin said on Pant.
Recently, Rishabh helped India with unbeaten 40-run knock off 28 balls to tie the T20I series 1-1 against New Zealand.
Fresh to international cricket, the aggressive batsman Pant has played a dynamic role in the top-flight cricket.
However, he would cherish his unbeaten 159 in the Test series Down Under at Sydney.
So far, the rookie has represented India in 12 T20Is, nine Tests and nine Tests. He smashed two tons and as many half-centuries in the Test circuit.
India has bases covered for the 2019 World Cup:
The 56-year-old Azharuddin who served as one of the successful skippers for India added it would be sad if the Men in Blue won’t lift the coveted trophy.
Azharuddin reiterated that Virat Kohli-led side had covered all the basis—to fire in the United Kingdom (UK). The cricketing carnival is all set to kick off on May 30 in London.
“I think I would be very disappointed if India doesn’t win the World Cup in 2019. India has all the talent and ammunition to win the Cup in England,” Azharuddin concluded.
In the lead-up of the ODI showpiece, India is scheduled to take on Australia in the 50-over home series. And thereon, things would be clear for India, so as, the fate of Pant’s inclusion in the much-awaited squad.
The right-handed batsman Azharuddin represented India between 1985 and 200. He featured in 334 ODIs and 99 Tests for India.
