MS Dhoni, a skipper of CSK, admits that the team have gone wrong right from their second game onwards and 2020 wasn’t their year. He says the next three games will be a preparation for the upcoming IPL 2021 as the loss against Mumbai Indians virtually ends their chances of reaching playoffs.
Chennai Super Kings suffered their biggest defeat in IPL in terms of wickets and balls left. It was also the first time that CSK have lost a match by 10 wickets in the history of the tournament.
MS Dhoni: CSK Will Play Next 3 Matches For Pride And Preparation For 2021
Chennai Super Kings had a forgetful 2020 although there were huge expectations on them in the 13th season of the Indian Premier League. UAE hasn’t proved lucky for the three-time champions who are on the verge of not reaching playoffs for the first time in IPL.
MS Dhoni had recently announced his retirement from international cricket on Independence Day, so there were a lot of eyes on CSK in IPL 2020. But things haven’t gone to plan for them as they find themselves languishing in the last position with just 6 points from 11 matches having won only 3 matches.
CSK captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni admitted his side failed to perform to its potential from the second game onwards after defeating Mumbai Indians in the opener and also commented that the remaining games would see a lot of youngsters in the squad. But he maintained that he is going to feature in the remaining three matches as captains have to shoulder responsibility.
“Hopefully we can turn it around in the next three games at least for pride. We need to have a clear picture for the next year.”
“The kind of auction, where the venues will be, and you want to give the boys a chance to perform and show their talent. We have to make the most of the next three games and it is good preparation for the next year. Captain can’t run away, so I’ll be playing in all the games.”
On his side’s performance on Friday, MS Dhoni said that CSK haven’t performed well this year.
“What you need to see is what are the things that are going wrong. Specially this year, it hasn’t been our year.” he said.
“What you need to see is where we actually went wrong, right from the second game,” Dhoni said at the post-match presentation.
“There can be a 100 reasons, but one of the main things you ask yourself is whether you’ve played to the potential you’ve got no matter the conditions.”
The stars for CSK were Faf Du Plessis who scored 376 runs averaging 41.78 while Shane Watson scored 285 runs averaging 31.67. Amongst bowlers, Deepak Chahar picked 10 wickets averaging 30.4 while Sam Curran had also picked up 10 wickets averaging 28.9.
MS Dhoni: CSK Were Also Unlucky Not To Have Won Tosses
The former India captain said luck also did not favour CSK this time as injuries to key players like Ambati Rayudu and Dwayne Bravo hurt them and backing of Kedar Jadhav and Piyush Chawla backfired.
The selection policies were also questionable as Imran Tahir, and Mitchell Santner were not considered for a single match. Imran Tahir finally played against Mumbai, but the move wasn’t successful as there were not many runs on board to defend.
“It was more about the bowling. Rayudu got injured, the other batsman were maybe not there 200% and in cricket when you’re going through a tough phase, you need a bit of luck. The games we wanted to bat first, we haven’t won the toss, and there’s no dew and all of a sudden when we bat first there’s dew,” he said.
He said cumulatively there have been batting failures as the likes of Kedar Jadhav, Murali Vijay, Ruturaj Gaikwad failed almost every time they were given opportunities but termed it as part and parcel of the game.
“You can’t always think the result will go your way. I feel the boys have done that, they’ve tried to perform. I think it’s important for us to have a clear picture of next year. There are lots of ifs and buts – auction, where the venues will be.”
CSK won the opener against Mumbai, then lost to Rajasthan, Delhi and SRH before returning to winning ways by defeating Punjab. They lost to Kolkata and Bangalore before beating Hyderabad. But Delhi and Mumbai beat them again as they lost eight and won only three.
