India’s leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal has given credit to former skipper MS Dhoni for his and teammate Kuldeep Yadav’s success at the International level. Both the wrist spinners have done a fine job for the Indian team in the limited-overs format and Chahal feels that Dhoni deserves 50% of the credit for their success.
MS Dhoni has great experience under his belt and he was often seen guiding Chahal and Kuldeep on the right path. In fact, Dhoni’s instructions can be clearly heard on the stump mic when he tells his spinners to bowl according to the situation. The former Indian skipper is well known to stay two steps ahead of the opposition.
MS Dhoni is the guiding light for the spinners
Furthermore, Dhoni is expert in predicting what is going on in the batsman’s mind and then he passes on the guidelines to his spinners. Dhoni is often heard saying from the behind the stumps, “Agla wala thoda upar ya bahar dalna, marne ki koshish karega (Try to pitch the next ball a bit wide and full, he may try to hit).
This kind of shrewdness also helps the bowlers in making his plans. In fact, we had seen that Dhoni would help the Indian captain Virat Kohli in setting up the field. The legendary wicket-keeper has a eye of a hawk and his game awareness makes him one of the smartest players in the world.
Yuzvendra Chahal said while talking to Star Sports Cricket Connected, “Mahi bhai deserves 50% credit for the success Kuldeep and I have enjoyed.”
“When I got my first 5-wicket haul in South Africa, Duminy was batting and continuously employing the sweep shot. Mahi bhai told me to keep the ball on the stumps and not to try too much. I think after 3-4 overs I got him LBW.”
“Similar thing happened to me in New Zealand, where Latham was playing one sweep after another against me. Mahi bhai told me not to change anything and let the singles come and eventually he got dismissed.”
Chahal also revealed why Dhoni is so successful with his review. Decision Review System is mostly famous as the Dhoni Review System as the former Indian skipper generally gets the review on target.
“We get a lot of confidence, especially when it comes to DRS. He just asks us if the ball is within the stumps and then allows us to take it. We have got the confidence that if Mahi Bhai has asked us to take the DRS, the batsman would definitely be out.”
MS Dhoni has not played in the Indian colours since the 2019 World Cup semi-final against New Zealand.
