Former Indian wicket-keeper and the former chief of the Indian senior men’s selection committee panel, MSK Prasad supports to send a big Indian squad for the upcoming Australia tour.
Though the coronavirus pandemic is still on, international cricket is now slowly returning. While ongoing England vs West Indies Test series resumed the international cricket, England will then play against Ireland, Pakistan and Australia at home. Other teams are also trying to resume international cricket as soon as possible.
Till the latest plan, India can resume their international cricket journey through the Australia tour at the end of this year. In this Australia tour, India will play four Tests and some limited-overs matches.
While the Cricket West Indies (CWI) has sent a 26-member squad for the ongoing Test series in England, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has sent a 29-member squad (including some limited-overs specialists) for the Test and T20I series in England. MSK Prasad supports this process of sending a jumbo squad for the most-recent upcoming foreign tours, like India tour of Australia 2020/21.
Prasad told PTI, “The team management and seniors will have an opportunity to look at the youngsters who are knocking the doors. In this process, you can also monitor those players who can be the potential guys for different spots in future.”
Prasad feels that it is tough to trust the net bowlers in this present COVID-19 pandemic moment. So, it will be better to send a big squad in the foreign tours which can help to get the proper net practice too in a bio-secure environment.
He added, “Since we cannot trust the net bowlers about their exposure to COVID, it would be ideal to go with a large contingent as we can be assured of all the players’ safety as they will be in a bio-secure environment. In case someone tests COVID positive, then the players from this contingent can be picked as they would have served the mandatory quarantine period.”
Our main bowlers will have fresh batsmen to bowl at unlike the same bunch of first-team boys: MSK Prasad
Prasad further explained how this process will be helpful for every Indian cricketer.
He continued, “Even for our main bowlers, they will have fresh batsmen to bowl at unlike the same bunch of first team boys. For instance, Shreyas Iyer is very aggressive and at times can be unorthodox. So, he might offer variety of skills which the Australian batsman might possess. On the other hand, a left-armer Khaleel Ahmed’s presence will help in preparing for Mitchell Starc’s angled deliveries.”
The former chief selector also picked up his favourite 29-member Indian squad (including three limited-overs players) for the upcoming Australia tour.
