Mumbai Indians are likely to release as many as two players from their squad before the IPL auction. As per a report in mykhel, the defending champions might let go opener Evin Lewis and pacer Mitchell McClenaghan. Lewis had joined the team before IPL 2018 for Rs 3.8 Crore while McClenaghan had re-joined the franchise as a replacement player for Jason Behrendorff after he was ruled out.
Lewis, the West Indies’ opener, got to play just three matches in IPL 2019 as Rohit Sharma had promoted himself in the batting order. He managed 48 runs in three matches with the highest score of 32. Last year, Lewis performed consistently and scored 382 runs with a strike-rate of 138.40.
McClenaghan, who has played 56 IPL matches for Mumbai Indians, got five matches in IPL 2019 in which he scalped three wickets. The left-arm pacer is now a freelance cricketer and plays different leagues around the world.
If the franchise releases the two players, there can be a case when both of them might be in demand during the IPL auction. Apart from them, the franchise is unlikely to release any player.
Though there will few players who will miss the league due to different reasons. Behrendorff is set to have a back surgery which will rule him out of the game for five to six months. It will also see him miss IPL 2019.
Rasikh Salam, who was bought by the franchise before IPL 2019, will also miss the league as he was banned by BCCI for two years for age-fraud.
Senior all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has retired from international cricket and IPL.
The IPL auction for the next season takes place on December 19 in Kolkata. So far, only Delhi Capitals have traded Sherfane Rutherford to Mumbai Indians for Mayank Markande while Kings X Punjab have traded R Ashwin to Delhi Capitals for Jagadeesha Suchith.
