The Najam Sethi-led interim management committee that is currently running the PCB has been granted an extension of two months by the prime minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif, who is also the patron of the Pakistan Cricket Board.
The Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination issued a notification on Monday regarding the same. The ministry which acts as a conduit between the board and government had recommended that an extension of between two to a maximum of four weeks be considered for the management committee that runs the PCB’s daily affairs.
In addition, they requested the Pakistani prime minister to name two candidates for the PCB board, one of whom was to serve as chairman. The notification sent out by the IPC office said nothing about the nominees.
The Najam Sethi-Led Committee Will Have 120 Days To Revise The Constitution And Elect A New Chairman
This extension means that the Najam Sethi-led committee now have two more months till July 21 to work till June 21, on reviving the 2014 constitution, despite their original tenure ending on April 21.
It must be noted that PCB’s former chairman, Ramiz Raja, was dismissed from his position shortly after the national team’s 3-0 home series defeat against England.
Sethi came in leading a 14-member management committee with a brief to replace the board’s 2019 constitution with the one that was in place in 2014. The biggest change that will entail is the return of the regional and services department set-up in domestic cricket.
That will once more result in a complete overhaul of Pakistan’s domestic cricket system, which had been running on a more efficient six-team basis of provincial teams for the previous three seasons. At the request of the then-prime minister and current captain, Imran Khan, the model was modeled on the Australian Shield organization.
The management committee is also responsible for forming a board of governors and electing a chairman, with Sethi himself in the fray, according to the 2014 constitution.
According to the 2014 constitution, the PCB’s board will comprise ten members: four regional representatives (top-four teams from the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy), four representatives of services organizations (top-four department teams), and the two members nominated by the patron/prime minister.
An ex-officio, non-voting 11th member shall be the federal secretary of the IPC ministry (or any other officer so designated by them). To encourage continuity in the system, each member of the board of Governors has a three-year tenure, which is equal to one term as chairman.
