Netherlands 15-man squad announced for 2016 ICC WT20
On Saturday, the Netherlands announced their 15-member squad for the upcoming 2016 ICC World T20 which will be played in India from 8th March to 3rd April.
Netherlands had earned their spot for 2016 ICC World T20 after finishing as a joint champion along with Scotland in 2015 ICC World T20 Qualifier.
In 2014 World T20 which was held in Bangladesh, Netherlands performed well and won the hearts of cricket fans around the world. At first, they finished top in the preliminary group stage round after dramatically winning their final preliminary group match against Ireland. They chased a huge total of 190 runs in 14 overs to earn the spot for Super 10 round.
Later, they performed well in Super 10 also against the world cricket’s giants. They were very close to beating South Africa but failed. They, however, were successful in defeating England for the second time in World T20 history after 2009.
Netherlands coach Anton Roux is very confident about the 2016 World T20 squad as he said, “This group has shown an immense amount of commitment to what we are trying to achieve on the field of play.”
Peter Borren remains the skipper like in 2014 ICC WT20, while former South African all-rounder Roelof van der Merwe will be the second player to play for two countries in ICC World T20. Former Netherlands bowler Dirk Nannes was the first player to play in two ICC WT20 for two different countries (He represented Netherlands in 2009 and Australia in 2010)
In 2016 ICC World T20, Netherlands are in Group A in the preliminary stage along with Bangladesh, Ireland and Oman. The Dutch team will face Bangladesh on 9th March while next two matches of Netherlands will be played on 11th and 13th March against Oman and Ireland respectively. All of these matches will be played at Dharamshala.
If they finish top of the group like 2014 WT20, they will be rewarded with a place Group 2 in Super 10 stage where they will compete with Australia, Pakistan, New Zealand and host nation India for the cup title.
