New Zealand Vs India 2020: 5th T20I, Mount Maunganui – Twitter Reactions

The visitors India snatched another victory against the hosts New Zealand at Bay Oval (Mount Maunganui) and completed the whitewash in the five-match T20I series.

After winning the toss, the stand-in Indian captain Rohit Sharma decided to bat first. The visitors managed to score 163/3 (20 overs) in the first batting. In reply, the hosts were restricted to 156/9 (20 overs)

At the start of the chasing, the Indian bowlers picked up three quick wickets as the hosts were struggling on 17/3. From that situation, the wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Seifert and experienced Ross Taylor controlled the innings very well and put the 99 runs partnership for the fourth wicket. But after that partnership was broken, the hosts batting faced another collapse, and they just failed to reach the target.

In the final over, New Zealand had only one wicket in hand, and they needed to score 21 more runs to win the match. Though Ish Sodhi hit two sixes to Shardul Thakur in that final over, the hosts failed to win this match too.

While Seifert scored 50 runs off 30 balls (5 fours and 3 sixes), Taylor scored 53 runs off 47 balls (5 fours and 2 sixes). But no other Kiwi batsmen reached the 20-run mark.

Among the Indian bowlers, Jasprit Bumrah (3/12) bagged three wickets while Navdeep Saini (2/23) and Shardul Thakur (2/38) took two wickets each. Also, Washington Sundar (1/20) picked up one wicket in this match.

KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma provided a solid start for India

Once again, KL Rahul and Sanju Samson opened the innings for the Indian team. However, Samson again failed to utilise the opportunity as he was dismissed in the second over after scoring just two runs. Rahul handled that early situation well along with the skipper Rohit Sharma.

Rohit and Rahul put 88 runs partnership for the second wicket. The most run-getter in this T20I series, Rahul lost his wicket after scoring 45 runs off 33 balls (4 fours and 2 sixes). Rohit and Shreyas Iyer managed to continue the stable situation and put 42 runs partnership for the third wicket before the stand-in captain was retired-hurt due to calf injury.

Rohit completed his half-century in 35 balls and scored 60 runs off 41 balls before deciding to walk-off the field. He didn’t come to field further as KL Rahul led the Indian team till the end of the match.

Iyer remained not out on 33 runs while Manish Pandey was batting on 11 runs off four balls. However, Shivam Dube (5) fell cheaply.

Among the Kiwi bowlers, Scott Kuggeleijn (2/25) took two wickets while Hamish Bennett (1/21) claimed one wicket.
