New Zealand vs Bangladesh 2016/17, 3rd T20I: Corey Anderson’s Power Hitting Help Hosts Complete 3-0 Clean Sweep

On the back of a stellar batting performance from all-rounder Corey Anderson, New Zealand completed a 3-0 rout (in the T20I series) over Bangladesh at the Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui. This game was Bangladesh’s last chance to ensure that there was at least one win in their column for the tour (taking the limited-overs series into consideration), but the visitors ended up squandering that chance as well. Skipper Mashrafe Mortaza won a decent toss and had no hesitation in putting the hosts in to bat.

New Zealand didn’t get off to an ideal start, as the new look opening pair of Kane Williamson and Jimmy Neesham couldn’t provide the fireworks. Hard-hitting batsman Colin Munro, who scored a ton in the second T20I, was dismissed for a duck as the hosts seemed in some trouble at 36-2. Tom Bruce made his way back to the hut soon as well with the Kiwis being reduced to 41-3.

Williamson, however, remained solid and ensured that he held up one end. While the right-hander was more than happy to take the singles, his partner Corey Anderson was in a different frame of mind altogether. The southpaw took the Bangladeshi bowlers to the cleaners as he unleashed his fury of clean hits.

Medium pacer Soumya Sarkar, used as a part-time bowler, was thrashed for 21 runs in his only over with three sixes against his name. Anderson remained unbeaten on 94 off just 41 deliveries with two fours and 10 massive sixes. Thanks to his explosive knock, New Zealand amassed a healthy 194-4 in 20 overs. Pacer Rubel Hussain was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets for 31 runs in his quota of 4 overs.

Bangladesh once again got off to a rocketing start as Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar came out all guns blazing. When the second wicket fell for 82, only 8.2 overs had been bowled and the run-rate was never an issue. However, the old middle-order woes dented Bangladesh as the hosts struck regularly to adversely impact the scoring rate.

Leg-spinner Ish Sodhi was terrific as he conceded just 22 runs in four overs picking a couple of wickets. Bangladesh eventually fell short by 27 runs as the Kiwis pulled things back rather smoothly .
