The host side New Zealand has secured the Test series against Bangladesh by winning the rain-interrupted second Test at Wellington. With this victory, the host side is leading the three-match Test series by 2-0 with one to go.

Although the first two days were entirely washed out, the home team still comfortably managed a dominating victory. After winning the toss, the host side sent Bangladesh to bat first. The visiting side managed to score 211 runs in the first innings before getting all out.

In reply, the host side scored 432/6 before declaring their first innings. At the end of that innings, the Kiwi side were leading by 221 runs. Bangladesh was bundled out for just 209 runs in their second innings and suffered a defeat by an innings and 12 runs.

iii) New Zealand won the Test by an innings and 12 runs.

  • It is New Zealand’s smallest victory (by an innings) in their Test history. Their previous smallest was winning by an innings and 13 runs against Zimbabwe at Auckland in 1998.

i) At the age of 35 years and 3 days, New Zealand cricketer Ross Taylor scored 200 runs off 212 balls.

  • Ross Taylor becomes the oldest New Zealand cricketer to hit a Test double century. The previous record holder was Brendon McCullum who scored his last Test double century at the age of 33 years and 62 days (against Pakistan at Sharjah in 2014). 
  • It was Ross Taylor’s third Test double century. He is the third New Zealand cricketer to hit more than two double centuries in the Test career. Stephen Fleming (three Test double centuries) and Brendon McCullum (four Test double centuries) are the other two Kiwi cricketers to achieve this feat.

i) During Bangladesh’s second innings, New Zealand left-arm pacer Neil Wagner had the bowling figures of 14-4-45-5.

  • It was the second best bowling figures in a Test innings by a New Zealand bowler against Bangladesh in the New Zealand soil. The record is 18.2-2-53-7 by Chris Cairns (at Hamilton in 2001).

 

ii) New Zealand left-arm pacer Neil Wagner had the match bowling figures of 27-8-73-9.

  • It was the second best bowling figures in a Test match by a New Zealand bowler against Bangladesh. The record is 60.4-21-170-12 by the left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori (at Chittagong in 2004).
