No Threat to ‘Glitzy’ IPL Due To Coronavirus: Brijesh Patel

Even as few cases of the Coronavirus have been reported in India, the Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council chairman Brijesh Patel has ruled out any threat to the forthcoming lucrative T20 league. However, the senior authorities and officials stressed on the fact that they are closely monitoring the situation.

The coronavirus which is a deadly disease has claimed over 3,110 lives and infected more than 90,000 worldwide. Subsequently, it has wreaked havoc on the international calendar of various sporting events across the world. In fact, it has even put the upcoming Tokyo Olympics 2020 under doubt.

The thirteenth edition of the IPL will kick-off with an epic encounter as four-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians (MI) will launch their title defence against three-time IPL champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at the Wankhede Stadium on March 29, Sunday.

All in all, the intriguing final will take place on 24 May.

There is no threat as of now: Brijesh Patel

When asked whether there is any possible threat to IPL owing to the deadly contagious, Patel confidently said that there is no threat at the moment while adding that they are keeping a tab on the situation because people’s lives are more important than the sport.

“There is no threat as of now and we are keeping a tab (on the situation),” Brijesh Patel added.

Meanwhile, the Board of Control for Cricket in India chief Sourav Ganguly has also ruled out any threat to the cash-rich IPL or the upcoming three-match ODI series between India and South Africa.

The first ODI is scheduled to be played on March 12, Thursday at HPCA Stadium, Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh. Moreover, India is yet to announce the squad for the impending series.

 

“Nothing in India. Not even discussed it (Coronavirus)'” BCCI President Sourav Ganguly added.

Another top BCCI official on the condition of anonymity maintained that the South African team was coming according to the schedule for the three-match ODI series.
