After winning the Wellington T20I against India in a dominating way, the New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson claimed that it was a complete performance from the side.
The host side New Zealand has taken the 1-0 lead in the three-match T20I series after winning the first T20I on Wednesday at Wellington. After India sent them to bat first, the host side had the perfect start and managed to score 219/6 in 20 overs. The openers Tim Seifert and Colin Munro provided an excellent beginning for the team as they had an 86-run partnership.
Tim Seifert, the wicketkeeper-batsman, played a magnificent knock of 84 runs off 43 balls. Colin Munro and the skipper Kane Williamson both scored 34 runs while Ross Taylor (23 runs off 14 balls) and Scott Kuggeleijn (20 not out off seven balls) played some brilliant cameos in the end.
In the second innings, New Zealand bundled out the visitors for just 139 runs (19.2 overs) as the hosts won by 80 runs. Apart from MS Dhoni (39 runs), none of the other Indian batsmen reached the 30-run marks. From the early of that innings, the Kiwi bowlers were carrying the momentum successfully where their batsmen finished.
New Zealand pacer Tim Southee (3/17) bagged three wickets while Lockie Ferguson (2/22), Mitchell Santner (2/24) and Ish Sodhi (2/26) picked up two wickets each.
The New Zealand skipper praised the entire team for their effort in the game. However, he credited to the bowling and fielding side for this massive 80-run victory.
In the post-match presentation ceremony, Kane Williamson said, “Fantastic performance all around. One of the complete performances you search for. Seifert was excellent. The bowling performance was outstanding. We had runs on the board but bowling and fielding were outstanding.”
New Zealand Women’s vs India Women’s T20I was a great game
Earlier, on the same day, the New Zealand women also won their T20I series opener against India women at the same venue. New Zealand women scored 159/4 in the first 20 overs. In reply, India women were in a good position at one stage when they were batting on 102/1. However, the visiting side faced a long batting collapse in the end, and they were all out on 136 runs in 19.1 overs.
Kane Williamson also spoke on that women’s game and called that was a great game. He is hopeful that both teams will maintain this scenario in their T20I series.
Kane Williamson spoke about that women’s game, “It was a great game. Throughout the series the two teams have followed a similar trend. Hopefully, they can do that in the next game and we can follow it up.”
Both men’s and women’s will play a three-match series, where the host sides are leading by 1-0 with two to go in both series. On this Friday (8 February), the second T20I of both series will be played at the Eden Park (Auckland).
