Since his return to the cricket after completion of the suspension, the 20-year-old Prithvi Shaw has hugely impressed with his very consistent batting performances. According to the recent media reports, Shaw is likely to return to the Indian Test team when they tour in New Zealand in the early next calendar year.
After an impressive start in his Test career at a very early age, Prithvi Shaw faced some tough times. At first, he was ruled out from the Test series during the Australia tour in last summer (2018/19) after he received an ankle injury during the tour game.
Later, after recovering from that injury, Prithvi Shaw made a good return in domestic cricket and Indian Premier League (IPL). But once again he received another major blow as the BCCI handed him the back-dated eight-month ban for inadvertently doping violation.
Finally, desperate Prithvi Shaw just returned to the cricket in the middle of last November. Since his latest return, the youngster has impressed with his consistent top performances with the bat. The right-handed batsman played five matches in the recently concluded Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2019/20 (domestic T20 tournament), where the Mumbai batsman scored 240 runs with an average of 48.00. During that tournament, Shaw scored 63, 30, 64, 30 and 53 runs.
Ranji Trophy 2019/20 has started on this Monday (9th December) morning and Prithvi Shaw once again shined with the bat on that day. The 20-year-old opening batsman provided a solid start for his team as he scored 66 runs off 62 balls (11 fours and only six).
For the upcoming New Zealand tour, Prithvi Shaw can be selected as the third opener
While the selectors are thinking for the crucial upcoming away Test series against the hosts New Zealand, Prithvi Shaw’s recent form has put him in front of the fight. Before the senior team tours in New Zealand, India A will tour in New Zealand in the next month. This upcoming India A tour of New Zealand is going to be vital for the selection of senior Test team for the next Test series.
During the senior Indian team’s tour of New Zealand in January-March 2020, India will play five T20Is, three ODIs and two Tests against the hosts. The Test series will run at the end of this tour between 21st February and 4th March 2020. While Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal are likely to maintain their opening batting positions, Prithvi Shaw can be selected as the reserve opener for the Test series in New Zealand. However, the youngster has to face strong competitions for this position as Priyank Panchal, Abhimanyu Easwaran, KL Rahul etc. are also in this contention. So, the performances for India A is going to be vital for this special position.
A BCCI source recently told The Indian Express, “The selection committee is of the view that it’s better that Test specialists travel early to get used to conditions. It will help them get enough practice.”
Prithvi Shaw made his international debut during the home Test series against Windies in last October where he also hit a century. After playing two Tests, Shaw has scored 237 runs (average 118.50), including one century and one half-century.
