Former Indian captain Rahul Dravid opined why the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) achieved massive success in every season, and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) mostly failed to imitate this process.
MS Dhoni-led CSK team has featured in ten IPL tournaments (suspended for two seasons) and never finished below the top four. Apart from the two seasons (2009 and 2014), they have always played in IPL finals while they have won the trophy on three occasions. Dhoni-led CSK side also won the now-defunct Champions League T20 trophies for twice.
Meanwhile, RCB haven’t won a trophy yet although they have played three IPL finals. In the last three IPL seasons, they massively disappointed with their inconsistent performances as they finished at the bottom for two seasons and sixth position in 2018 edition.
Talking about the consistent success of CSK, Rahul Dravid pointed out the great team management behind the players who had good knowledge of cricket.
According to a book written by Tim Wigmore and Freddie Wilde, Dravid said, “When they got into the IPL, Chennai probably had an advantage over a lot of other franchises because their owners, India Cements, were already in the business of running cricket teams.
“CSK was just the most high-profile team that they ran. So in a sense they’ve always had people on the ground and their scouting system was probably better right at the start than any other team.”
Talking about RCB’s issues, their former captain Dravid felt that they never set up a balanced side. He believes that the weak team selections and auctions costed their journey.
He claimed, “Bangalore have never balanced their team very well. They had their best year when they had a bowler like Mitchell Starc who was able to close out games for them. But they kept going out and picking gun batsmen.”
CSK always have quality Indian players and overall bowlers: Rahul Dravid
Dravid also mentioned that choosing the quality Indian players was one of the crucial factors for a team’s success in IPL and the CSK managed it very well.
He said, “There are a lot of foreign players available for four slots. But there are a limited number of quality Indian players available, and the fact that CSK have been able to get some of the best guys has meant that they have always had that core.”
Rahul Dravid also felt that the stronger bowling squad differentiated the results of CSK and RCB. According to him, while RCB spent some huge money to the star players, they didn’t get the opportunity to go big for the quality bowlers.
The former RCB skipper added, “That’s where Chennai have always been successful because they’ve often had stronger bowling than Bangalore.
“For RCB, you always felt they will be chasing a gun death bowler. Then the first thing you realise is they’ve spent 15 crores on Yuvraj Singh and you think, ‘Oh, sh!t! They aren’t in the market for that!’” and by the time a death bowler comes round they won’t be able to spend any money so we can outbid them.”
In the meantime, the future of IPL 2020 is under the dark cloud due to the COVID-19 or coronavirus outbreak.
