Ravichandran Ashwin Claims His Maiden Five-Wicket Haul For Nottinghamshire
Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin shined in his second game for Nottinghamshire. He played an excellent all-rounder role in this match for his team. However, his performances were not enough for his team as they suffered a defeat by 132 runs.
While the Indian national cricket team is currently busy in England and Wales to play the 2019 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, Ashwin is busy in the English County Championship Division One where he is serving for Nottinghamshire. He made his debut for Nottinghamshire on the final day of the last month. It was the match against Essex where he took three wickets during the opposition’s first innings (3/162), but he finished as the most expensive bowler in that match. Ashwin also scored 5 and 35 runs in that match, but his team lost that match by an innings and 123 runs.
Ravichandran Ashwin performed well in the second game against Somerset
Then Ashwin played the latest match for Nottinghamshire against Somerset at Taunton. In the first innings of this match, Ashwin took three wickets (3/93), and Somerset managed to score 326 runs.
Nottinghamshire replied with the first innings total of 241 runs while Somerset managed a healthy lead of 85 runs. Ashwin scored 23 runs in that innings.
Ashwin took five wickets and also scored the highest runs for his team in the next two innings
In Somerset’s second innings, Ashwin bagged five wickets as he had the bowling figures of 30-8-59-5. After picking up one wicket on the day two evening (8th July), the off-spinner managed four more wickets on Tuesday (9th July). The left-arm spinner Liam Patterson-White also took five wickets in that same innings as Somerset were all out on just 169 runs in their second innings. Finally, Somerset put the 255 runs target for Nottinghamshire in the fourth innings of this match.
Coming to bat at no.4 position in that fourth innings, Ashwin once again played a crucial role. The right-handed batsman scored 41 runs off 104 balls (four boundaries) which was also the highest score for his team in that innings. But his innings failed to save his team as Nottinghamshire were bundled out for just 122 runs. Somerset won this match by 132 runs.
It is not the first English County Cricket experience for Ravichandran Ashwin. In 2017 season, he served for Worcestershire. While Worcestershire won the County Championship Division Two trophy in that season, Ashwin took 20 wickets in four matches. Ashwin also played well with the bat as he scored 214 runs in six innings with an average of 42.80.
