Reports: Faf Du Plessis to Captain the World XI side in Pakistan

South Africa Test skipper Faf du Plessis is expected to lead the World XI side which is set to visit Pakistan in September.

As per reports in the Geo Tv, sources who know the whereabouts of the development of the scheduled World XI tour confirmed that Du Plessis would lead a side comprised of many superstars of the game which will include top players from top notch playing nations.

“I can confirm you that Faf (du Plessis) will lead the World XI,” the source told Geo.tv.

International cricket in Pakistan has come to a standstill ever since the militant attack on the Sri Lankan team bus way back in 2009, and since then no team has travelled to Pakistan barring a small trip made by minnows Zimbabwe in 2015.

As per reports in the Geo Tv, the squad will also feature former Aussie captain George Bailey after talks with him has moved in a positive direction, and in all likelihood, he will be a part of the squad. The team will also feature one of South Africa’s mainstay in the middle-order Hashim Amla, New Zealand all-rounder James Neesham, former English skipper Paul Collingwood and few other top notch players from South Africa, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and Bangladesh.

The squad which will eventually play the series will be coached and managed by former Zimbabwe great Andy Flower which is likely to be announced on Friday.

The 33-year-old Protea has been a fantastic batsman for the nation over the years and had led South Africa in all three formats of the game. Under his leadership, the Proteas have won 19 out of 32 T20I’s eight out of nine ODI’s and eight out of 14 Tests. The World XI team is scheduled to visit Pakistan between September 5 and September 15 and will compete the Asian giants in three T20I’s at the Gadaffi Stadium to support Pakistan Cricket Board’s efforts to bring back cricket in Pakistan.
