Temba Bavuma, the South African skipper, revealed that he was not aware of his opening partner Quinton de Kock’s retirement from ODI cricket until the official announcement was made. The left-handed opener plans to focus more on playing in franchise T20 leagues around the world after the conclusion of the mega event in India.

Quinton de Kock has played a quintessential role for the South African cricket team in recent years. His consistent performances have played a crucial role in the team’s success, especially in white-ball formats. The left-handed opening batsman retired from Test cricket in December last year, and he recently announced his shock retirement from the 50-over format of the game.

Speaking to the media before the match against Australia Temba Bavuma said that he was ignorant of Quinton de Kock‘s decision to retire from ODI cricket before the official announcement. He reminisced about the times that they had played together since the U-15 days and praised him as one of the most talented players in South Africa.

“I wasn’t in the loop, as per his thinking or decision. With Quinny, at times, you can expect anything.”

“It doesn’t change how we see the guy. It’s always been a pleasure playing with Quinton from our Under-15 days at school. He is an incredible player, talented; too much talent. He will be a big loss to South Africa at least in the ODI stuff,” Temba Bavuma said.

Quinton de Kock has been one of the best players for South Africa in white-ball cricket. The left-handed batter would be eager to help his country win the upcoming ODI World Cup in India, where they will be competing to win their first-ever ICC trophy in international cricket.

Quinton de Kock Is One Of The Guys I Lean On From A Tactical Point Of View – Temba Bavuma

Temba Bavuma said that Quinton de Kock is one of the players he looks to for advice on the field. He also admitted that it might be difficult for him to overcome the loss of de Kock’s presence and wished him to have a successful time in T20 cricket.

“He is one of the guys I lean on from a tactical point of view. Not having him within the space is going to be a bit of a challenge but it’s something we will have to overcome.”

“I guess, maybe he made the decision a long time ago and it was about finding the right time to let everyone know. He has chosen his route, he is going to go the T20 route – the format he has succeeded quite well. All we can do is wish him the best,” Temba Bavuma added.

De Kock has the most ODI runs among South African players who are currently competing in white-ball cricket. When it comes to opening the batting in white-ball cricket, he is among the greatest in the field and would be key to the team’s success in the World Cup.
