Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar has stated that there is no better captain than MS Dhoni on slow turning pitches. The Indian Premier League will be played in the UAE this season, where pitches are slow and dry. The change in venue was commanded because of the increasing cases of Covid-19 in India. The matches in IPL 2020 will be played in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah.
The 13th edition of IPL was originally scheduled to kick off from March 29 was postponed indefinitely after April 15 due to the rising number of coronavirus cases in the nation. The postponing of the World Cup to 2021 gave the IPL a window to be conducted in September.
CSK’s spin attack is perfect for the UAE pitches: Sanjay Manjrekar
According to Manjrekar, CSK have an advantage in their hands with the team selection. They picked up a spin attack keeping in mind the turning pitch of Chepauk, their home ground which is similar to the conditions of UAE. He also lauded MS Dhoni, who he stated is the best captain in such conditions.
“When you look at the teams through this lens, CSK start with an advantage with their selection; Chepauk, CSK’s home, has been a turner for a while now, so they picked players who would thrive there. Chawla is such a welcome addition to their team. This is a spin attack that looks perfectly suited for the UAE; they may be able to get more out of Ravindra Jadeja as a bowler too.” Sanjay Manjrekar wrote in his column for Hindustan Times.
“Such conditions are also in Dhoni’s comfort zone. On slow turning pitches, no one captains better than MS. That he also has an experienced batch of Indian batsmen proficient on such pitches, make them strong contenders.”
No one does top gear like MI: Sanjay Manjrekar
Mumbai Indians’ side has been one of the best performing teams in the IPL, winning it on four different occasions since 2013. Sanjay Manjrekar believes Mumbai Indians are the most attacking side in the IPL with the likes of Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, and Kieron Pollard in the team.
Playing in third gear is CSK’s way. But that’s why, of late, MI has troubled them the most. Because no one does top gear like MI, with Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, and Kieron Pollard in their midst.” Manjrekar wrote.
MI will face CSK in the opener on the 19th of September. The last time these two faced each other was in the IPL 2019 final which MI won by a single run.
The Indian Premier League will be played in UAE amid the Coronavirus pandemic, from September 19 to November 10, amid COVID-19 protocols laid down by the ICC and BCCI.
