While India will tour New Zealand soon for the full international bilateral series, the national selection committee has already announced the Indian T20I squad. Ahead of the ODI and Test team selections, the selectors are now waiting for the updated news of Prithvi Shaw‘s fitness.
Indian national cricket team is currently busy in the home ODI series against Australia. After this three-match ODI series, the Indian cricketers will travel in New Zealand where they will play five-match T20I series, three-match ODI series and two-match Test series against the hosts. While the T20I series will run from 24th January to 2nd February 2020, they will play the ODI series from 5th to 11th February 2020. At the end of this tour, they will play the Test series between 21st February and 4th March 2020.
On last Sunday (12th January) night, the BCCI announced the T20I squad for New Zealand tour. The selectors will meet soon for the ODI and Test teams selections for this tour. The 20-year-old Prithvi Shaw is one of the talking points in the upcoming selection meeting.
Prithvi Shaw suffered a shoulder injury
According to a recent report from Mumbai Mirror, the national selectors want to see Prithvi Shaw in the Test series in New Zealand. The youngster Shaw was injured on his left shoulder during the recent Ranji Trophy match against Karnataka. On day one of that game (3rd January 2020), he received that injury when he was fielding. He suffered rotator cuff and labrum injury to his left shoulder. While the youngster earlier batted in that match and scored 29 runs, he didn’t come to bat during his team’s second innings.
Later, the BCCI updated his injury status on 7th January 2020. While he is under the rehabilitation process at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, he was removed from the two practice games squads for India A in the New Zealand tour. While the youngster is in the List A squad and unofficial Test squads of India A for this New Zealand tour, his availability for these assignments will be decided later.
Prithvi Shaw made his Test debut in October 2018 during the Rajkot Test against West Indies. He scored a century in his debutant Test innings. While the right-handed batsman has played two Tests, he has scored 237 runs with an average of 118.50, including one century and one half-century.
Unfortunately, Prithvi Shaw missed the last year’s international cricket assignments due to his fitness issue as well as his suspension. After returning from the suspension, Shaw impressed with his very consistent batting performances.
