Bangladesh’s back-to-back defeats is disappointing for Shakib Al Hasan and he is showing his discontent to follow as a captain in the Test cricket. Bangladesh cricket chief Nazmul Hasan said Shakib has shown disinterest in captaincy for Test captaincy but he will continue.
Bangladesh became the first country to lose against 10 Test teams after their defeat against Afghanistan. Shakib’s team lost the match with 224 runs against Afghanistan which was an embarrassing defeat.
“We have noticed he did not have much interest in Test (cricket). You have seen that when we were touring foreign countries, he wanted to have a break during the Tests,” Nazmul told reporters in Dhaka late Wednesday.
“Naturally he might have less interest. But we never heard that he has less interest in captaincy. If he is skipper, then he has to play. If you are not skipper, then you can skip,” he said.
Shakib al Hasan is concerned to focus on his game
It was Afghanistan’s second win in a Test match as in total they have played three Test matches. The one-off Test match was a complete disaster for Bangladesh. Shakib expressed that it will be better for his game if he didn’t lead the team.
“It will be best if I didn’t have to lead,” Shakib told reporters after the Afghanistan loss. “I personally believe it will be good for my game.
“And if I have to continue leading, then obviously there is a lot to discuss about (with the board),” Shakib Al Hasan said.
Nazmul Hasan said that the defeat has deeply hurt the team and he will talk to players once they overcome this phase.
“Our boys are emotional. I will speak with him when things get calm,” he said.
The Bangladesh next match is with Zimbabwe and Afghanistan in tri-nation Twenty20 tournament scheduled to start from Friday (13 September). Shakib will lead the team.
