The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is currently busy to find out the next Indian head coach. In the latest report, around 2,000 coaches have shown interest in this role.

Recently, Sourav Ganguly has revealed that he is interested in the coaching of the national team but not at present.

Ganguly told according to IANS, “Definitely, I’m interested but not at this point of time. Let one more phase go then I will throw my name into the fray.”

At present, Sourav Ganguly is the President of Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB). He also played the advisor role of Delhi Capitals (DC) in the IPL 2019. Moreover, Ganguly is also very famous for his commentary.

Ganguly claimed that he wanted to complete this busy phase before taking the head coach responsibility. However, he also added that he would definitely try to get it in future.

Ganguly said, “Currently, I’m associated with too many things – IPL, CAB, TV commentary. Let me complete this. But I will definitely put my hat at some stage, provided I get selected. But definitely, I am interested. Not now, but in the future.”

Whoever the panel feel is good they should do it – Sourav Ganguly about the Indian head coach selection

Though the BCCI has received huge applications for the head coach role, there are not many big names. So, the present head coach Ravi Shastri has a chance to get an extension on his contract. This possibility is growing up after the current Indian captain Virat Kohli has openly backed Shastri as the head coach. Kohli claimed that he would be happy if Shastri remained as the head coach.

Ganguly spoke about Indian head coach selection, “Going by the applicants, I don’t see any heavyweight names. I heard Mahela Jayawardene would apply but ultimately he didn’t… There are not many big names who have applied for the coach’s job. Ultimately, I don’t know what the panel will decide. They have been around for a while. We will see how big the term they will give. Not many names who have applied. Whoever they feel is good they should do it.”

The newly formed Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) will take the interview of the shortlisted candidates. The three members of the CAC are Kapil Dev, Anshuman Gaekwad and Shantha Rangaswamy.

However, Ganguly hasn’t wished to make any comments about whether Shastri should stay as the head coach or not.

He added, “I will hold my opinion on that. I don’t think it’s right for me to say about that. I’m too far from the system that decides the coach.”

West Indies in West Indies will be a lot stronger

The Indian national cricket team is currently busy in the West Indies and the USA to play the full international bilateral series against Windies. In this tour, India will play three-match T20I, three-match ODI and two-match Test series against Windies.

Ganguly feels that India will face tougher competition against Windies in this tour. While Windies are the latest champions of the ICC World T20 (2016), they are also improving in Test cricket. In their last Test series, Windies beat the strong England side at home by the 2-1 margin.

Ganguly spoke about this tour, “West Indies in West Indies will be a lot stronger. T20 is their preferred format. They enjoy playing T20s and they are the current World T20 Champions. The two matches in Florida will be tough games.

“Test matches will also be tough as they played very well against England. It won’t be an easy West Indies tour as it was five years ago. India will be challenged. There are a lot of young players in the team.

“As I’ve said before you want to see these young players get consistent opportunities. You keep saying horses for courses, but I feel don’t judge a horse if you want to keep them on the course. Consistency is important for rhythm and confidence.”

This India tour of West Indies and the USA will run from 3rd August to 3rd September 2019.
