South Africa Slips a Spot to No. 3 in the ICC Test Team Rankings
South Africa led by Faf du Plessis has slipped to the third spot in the latest ICC Test Team Rankings. The world cricket governing body has revealed the updated list soon after Sri Lanka routed the proteas 2-0 in the two-match Test series.
To retain the second spot on the ICC Test rankings, the Black Caps have to seal the series against the Tigers.
So far, Kiwis are second on the list with 107 points. As South Africa lost to a lower-ranked team, they had to face a huge penalty in terms of losing the rating points.
Earlier, the Proteas went into the series with 110 points, as India lead the charts with 116 points.
Also, the hosts lost five crucial points while losing out by a wicket at Kingsmead Durban in the first Tests.
Well, at St George’s Park in Port Elizabeth, resurgent Sri Lanka registered a convincing eight-wicket win in the second Test to claim a whitewash of the top-notch side.
Meanwhile, Australia and England is a point away to star at par with the Proteas.
Following a 3-0 whitewash over Pakistan, South Africa fared poorly in the traditional format.
However, Sri Lanka added four points to the tally to bag overall 93 points to maintain their sixth place on the list of ICC Test team rankings.
Besides, the all-round show helped the Lions to better their points in the extended format.
Interestingly, the Islanders became the first-ever Asian team to script history in South Africa by clinch a Test series.
Apart from it, Pakistan is placed on the seventh spot with 88 points followed by the West Indies Cricket Team (77), Bangladesh (69) and Zimbabwe is on the tenth place with just 13 points.
