India thrashed Sri Lanka in the second Test match at Vidarbha Cricket Association Stadium, Jamtha (Nagpur).

After winning the toss, Sri Lanka decided to bat first but they were bundled out for just 205 runs.

In reply, India declared their first innings after putting 610 runs on the board for the loss of 6 wickets (610/6 decl.). At the end of the first innings, India took a mammoth 405 runs lead.

In their second innings, Sri Lanka was again bundled out for just 166 runs.

India won this match by an innings and 239 runs and took the 1-0 lead in the 3-match Test series.

  1. During Sri Lanka’s first innings, opening batsman Dimuth Karunaratne completed 1,000 Test runs in 2017. He is the second batsman to achieve this feat in 2017. South African opener Dean Elgar (1,097 runs) was the first man to complete 1,000 Test runs in 2017.

Also, Dimuth Karunaratne became only the second Sri Lankan opener to score 1,000 or more Test runs in a calendar year. Sanath Jayasuriya was the first Sri Lankan opener to achieve this feat who had done that twice in his career and those were in the years of 1997 (1,209 runs) & 2004 (1,125 runs)

 

  1. On the day 2, no.3 Indian batsman Cheteshwar Pujara completed 1,000 Test runs in 2017. After Dean Elgar (South Africa) and Dimuth Karunaratne (Sri Lanka), Pujara became the third batsman to complete 1,000 Test runs in 2017.

Also, Pujara became the second Indian no. 3 batsman to score 1,000 or more Test runs in a calendar year. Rahul Dravid was the first Indian no.3 batsman to achieve this feat and that was in 2002 (1206 runs)

 

  1. Indian skipper Virat Kohli scored his 10th century (4 in Test and 6 in ODI) in international cricket in 2017. It is the most number of century scored by a captain in international cricket in a calendar year.
  1. Indian batsman Virat Kohli (213) scored his 5th Test double-century in this match and all of them as a skipper. After this double-century, Kohli became the joint most no.of Test double-century scorer as a captain. West Indian legend Brian Lara had also hit five double-centuries during his captaincy tenure.

11. Sri Lanka lost this match by an innings and 239 runs. It is their largest Test defeat (by an innings) in history. The previous record holder was South Africa who had defeated Sri Lanka by an innings and 229 runs at Cape Town in 2001.
