In low scoring games that go down to the wire, luck often becomes a crucial factor that can determine defeat or victory. For India, that moment was witnessed in the 35th over of their run chase in the second ODI at Kandy. The person to benefit was none other than the veteran, Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

With India struggling to chase the total, thanks to a comical collapse from the middle order, MS Dhoni stood as India’s only chance of creating a miracle and pulling off an unlikely win. After having lost all recognized batsmen and running short of partners, Dhoni forged a good partnership with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, as the two kept the scoreboard ticking with their running between the wickets, and also ensuring that there wasn’t any further damage.

However, on the third delivery of the 35th over by left arm pacer Vishwa Fernando, a billion souls were given the shock of their lives. Dhoni, on strike, got an inside edge and the ball deviated off his pads and went straight on to the stumps, making clear contact.

A clear sound was heard of the ball hitting the stumps. However, as fate would have it, the bails didn’t light up or fall down, thus meaning Dhoni stood there in the middle. That might have well been the moment for India in the game.
