A few hours after the announcement of Lasith Malinga, yet another, experienced fast bowler of Sri Lanka has called curtains on his career. Nuwan Kulasekara, who was an exceptional servant of the Sri Lanka Cricket Team during his prime will retire from the game with immediate effect, as per Sri Lanka reports.

The 37-year-old Nuwan Kulasekara was not part of Sri Lanka’s World Cup 2019 squad. He was last seen plying his trade for the national team in 2017. Also, Kulasekara hasn’t played any competitive cricket at the senior level since March 2018 during which he appeared only in List-A cricket.

Nuwan Kulasekara to retire with immediate effect:

Known for his ability to swing the ball both ways, Nuwan Kulasekara was a successful new-ball bowler for Sri Lanka in the limited-over formats. Not just with the new-ball, Kulasekara was a fine bowler at the death as well as the pacer had the ability to fire accurate yorkers under pressure.

Nuwan Kulasekara played 21 Tests and picked 48. The 37-year-old was more of a limited-overs specialist and in 184 ODI matches, he ended up picking 199 wickets. Kulasekara played 58 T20Is as well and managed to pick 66 wickets.

Kulasekara was part of Sri Lanka’s team which won the 2014 World T20 trophy. Besides it, he was part of the playing XI that lost to India in the 2011 World Cup final. In fact, he was the one, who conceded that six to MS Dhoni, which was tagged as one of the iconic shots of the game.

Kulasekara’s final appearance for Sri Lanka was an ODI against Zimbabwe at Hambantota. Shortly after, he had played his final T20I against Bangladesh.

He quit Tests in 2016 having played 21 matches in which he picked up 48 wickets since his debut. His last Test was at Lord’s in 2014. One of his greatest achievements came in 2008 when he reached the pinnacle of men’s ODIs bowling rankings.
