South Africa vs Sri Lanka - Day 2 (2nd Test)

On Day 2 of the second Test between South Africa and Sri Lanka at Cape Town, the hosts totally dominated the visitors Sri Lanka courtesy Kagiso Rabada and Vernon Philander. South Africa began their day on their overnight score 297/6 and made 392 runs. Quinton de Kock scored yet another ton.

In reply, Sri Lanka suffered a total collapse and were bundled out for 110. At the end of first innings, South Africa had a 282-run first innings lead but still did not enforce follow-on.

At stumps, South Africa were 35/0, with a total lead of 317.

  1. Beginning at an overnight score of 68, South African wicket-keeper-batsman Quinton de Kock completed his third Test century. It was the first Test century by a South African wicketkeeper-batsman against Sri Lanka. The previous highest Test score by a South African wicketkeeper-batsman against Sri Lanka was 92 by Mark Boucher at Cape Town in 2001.

 

  1. South Africa were bowled out on 392 runs, the 6th lowest total for them in a completed Test innings where more than one South African batsman hit a ton in that innings.

 

  1. Sri Lanka’s young pacer Lahiru Kumara bowled very well during South Africa’s first innings in this Test. Kumara’s final bowling figures were 25-1-122-6, the 2nd best bowling figures by a Sri Lankan bowler on the South African soil. The best bowling figures by a Sri Lankan bowler on the South African soil were 6/39 by Muttiah Muralitharan (at Durban in 2000).

Total 7 dismissals were affected by Sri Lankan wicket-keepers during South Africa’s first innings, joint highest no. of dismissals affected by a wicket-keeper in a Test innings and highest no.of dismissals affected by Sri Lankan wicket-keeper in a Test innings. However, there were two Sri Lankan wicket-keepers in that innings, Kusal Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal. Kusal Mendis had taken 3 catches on the Day 1 while Chandimal took the other 4 catches on Day 2.
