Statistical Review: Sri Lanka tour of England 2016 – 4th ODI

On Wednesday, England once again defeated Sri Lanka in the rain-affected 4th ODI of a 5-match ODI series at Kennington Oval, London to secure the ODI series. The three Lions have an unassailable lead of 2-0 with a game to play.

After winning the toss, England decided to field first. Sri Lanka put a big total on board by scoring 305/5 in 42 overs (Rain interrupted during Sri Lanka’s innings as the match was reduced to 42 overs per side). As per D/L method, England had to chase 308 runs in 42 overs which they got quite comfortably in 40.1 overs after losing only 4 wickets.

England won the match by 6 wickets with 11 balls to spare. After ending the 4th ODI, England secured the ODI series and currently they are leading by 2-0 in a 5-match ODI series as 3rd ODI was washed out due to rain while the first one was a tie. England won the 2nd ODI by 10 wickets.

As per Super series points table, England is well ahead of the visitors Sri Lanka as England has earned 16 points and Sri Lanka has only managed to earn 4 points. Sri Lanka is still winless in the ongoing England tour (if you excluded Ireland tour).

It was the highest 2nd wicket partnership for England against Sri Lanka in the ODI history. England’s previous highest 2nd wicket ODI partnership against Sri Lanka was 125 runs by Graeme Hick and Alec Stewart at Lord’s on 14th May 1999.

  1. England opener Jason Roy played a superb knock of 162 runs in this match before he was bowled by Sri Lankan right-arm pacer Nuwan Pradeep. Jason Roy became the second highest individual ODI run scorer for England cricket history. The highest individual ODI run scorer for England was unbeaten 167 runs by Robin Smith against Australia at Birmingham on 21st May 1993.

Also, it was Sri Lanka’s 5th defeat in ODI history after putting 300 or more runs while batting first.

Also, it was the 8th loss for a team in ODI history where at least 4 batsmen scored 50 or more than that runs in the same innings ended up on the losing side.
