  1. Indian opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan played very well in the first innings of the match as he scored 84 runs before getting out. It was Dhawan’s first Test innings in the Caribbean soil. This 84 run innings of Shikhar Dhawan was the 5th highest score by an Indian batsman in their maiden Test innings in West Indies. The other top four highest scores were: 130 by Polly Umrigar (1953), 115 by Brijesh Patel (1976), 108 by Sanjay Manjrekar (1989) and 96 by Ajay Jadeja (1997).

Shikhar Dhawan also became the 5th Indian opener to score a half-century in their maiden Test innings in West Indies. The other four openers were: Madhav Apte (64 in 1953), Sunil Gavaskar (65 in 1971), VVS Laxman (64 in 1997) and Ajay Jadeja (96 in 1997). Also, Dhawan’s 84 runs innings was the second highest score by an Indian opener in their maiden Test innings in West Indies.

 

  1. Indian skipper Virat Kohli played brilliantly in this innings as he remained unbeaten on 143 at the end of day 1. It was the highest score by an Indian batsman in his maiden Test innings as a captain in the Caribbean soil. The previous highest score was 49 by Rahul Dravid at St. John’s in 2006.

 

  1. Virat Kohli became the third Indian captain to score a Test century in West Indies. Before Kohli, the other two Indian captains were: Kapil Dev (100* at Port of Spain in 1983) and Rahul Dravid (146 at Gros Islet in 2006). Kohli needs only 4 more runs in this innings to become a highest runs scorer as an Indian captain in a Test innings in West Indies.

 

  1. On day 1, Virat Kohli also completed 1,000 Test runs as an Indian captain. Kohli became the second quickest (according to no. of innings) Indian captain along with former Indian Test captain MS Dhoni to complete 1,000 Test runs as both took 18 Test innings. Only Sunil Gavaskar took lesser innings to complete 1,000 Test runs as an Indian captain. Gavaskar took only 14 innings.

 

  1. India already crossed 300 runs mark on day 1 as India are on 302/4 at the stump of day 1. Previously, India won only once (out of 12 times) in the Caribbean soil when they put score 300+ runs on the board in the 1st innings of a Test match. India lost 3 Tests while, drew 9 Tests when they scored 300+ runs in the 1st innings of a Test match in West Indies.

On the other hand, India have won twice (out of 14 times) in the Caribbean soil when they scored less than 300 runs in the 1st innings of a Test match. India lost 7 Tests and drew 5 Tests when they scored less than 300 in the 1st innings of a Test match in West Indies.
