Former Australian captain Steven Smith has recently revealed that he wants to win a Test series on the Indian soil. As the present Indian team is the No.1-ranked Test side, Smith feels that it will be their great achievement to beat the strong Indian team at their home grounds.

The 30-year-old Steven Smith has admitted that an Australian cricketer generally dreams of winning the Ashes trophy or the World Cups. However, Smith wants to beat the present No.1-ranked Test Team India in India. Australia haven’t won a Test series in India since late 2004. After that series, Australia have won only one Test in India (at Pune in 2017).

While the IPL franchise Rajasthan Royals has recently organised a podcast, Smith told Ish Sodhi (Spin consultant and operations executive), “I would love to win a Test series in India. I think as an Australian cricketer we talk about Ashes, which is always big, the World Cup is big, but I think now India is the No.1 team in the world and it is a very difficult place to play Test cricket, so I would love to win a series there.

“Other than that I would not like to set too many goals, but take things day-by-day, series-by-series, just try to improve.”

When India last time toured in Australia (2018/19 summer), India won their first-ever bilateral Test and ODI series in Australia. According to the FTP schedule, India will travel Australia in the late period of this calendar year (2020). In late 2022, Australia have the schedule to tour India for the four-match Test series and three-match T20I series.

Steven Smith praised Ravindra Jadeja

Steven Smith has also revealed the name of the spinner who is a very tough bowler in the sub-continent. He feels that the Indian left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja is one of the toughest spinners to play in the sub-continent due to his consistency in length along with the effective variation.

Shaw added, “Like in my case, I had a cough syrup which I didn’t know was a banned substance. I have learnt a lesson from this and will not repeat it. Even if I am having a basic medicine, I run that through the BCCI doctors to ensure that there are no banned substances in it. Time away from cricket was a difficult period for me. It was a torture. It should not happen to anyone.”

“So, I think for a leg-spinner, having a good googly, or a slider is crucial and for fingers spinners, being able to change the pace without changing the arm speed too much [is important]. I reckon there a few around the world who do that, Jadeja is one of them. He is very difficult to play.”

It’s around a year of Smith’s return to international cricket after completing his one-year suspension due to his involvement in the sandpaper gate scandal during the 2018 Cape Town Test. Since then, he played so many important international matches, including the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 and Ashes 2019.

While the novel COVID-19 or coronavirus has forced the cricket world as well as the global daily busy life to take rest at the present moment, Smith likes this rest. However, he is hoping for a better situation at soon as he wants to return to the game very quickly.

Smith added, “It has been a pretty long year with the World Cup and Ashes, a few away one-day tours. So this rest is not the worst thing but hopefully it is for a few weeks. I am pretty keen to get back to playing.”

Recently, Steven Smith also completed his two-year ban from the captaincy as he is now available for the leadership role of his nation. However, Cricket Australia (CA) is unlikely to change any of their international captains immediately.
