Sunil Gavaskar on Saturday said that the current Indian captain Virat Kohli has acquired the best team in the history of Indian cricket with a proper balance of solid technical batsmen and wicket taking pacers. In Test matches, the batsmen include the likes of Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara,  Mayank Agarwal, Prithvi Shaw, wicket-keeper Wriddhiman Saha and Rohit Sharma besides the skipper himself provide the core of the batting lineup.

India boosts of having a bunch of talented batsmen and excellent spinners but the development of a group of world-class pacers have guaranteed India to be among the top in all formats.  Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami are the leaders among pacers which also includes a cast of talented seamers including Umesh Yadav, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and veteran Ishant Sharma. Spinner all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, pacer all-rounders Hardik Pandya and Hanuma Vihari coupled with spin wizards Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav have given India more chances of winning Test matches.

Sunil Gavaskar Says India Can Score More Runs Against Australia Besides Taking All 20 Wickets As Virat Kohli Leads From Front

Virat Kohli has been one of the most successful captains in Indian cricket history. He has already won the most number of Test matches as captain for India having so far captained India in 55 Tests and India has won 33 of them. He surpassed former skipper MS Dhoni’s 27 Test wins from 60 matches captained.

“Definitely, without a question. India has got such a varied bowling attack today and that is so essential. There is a saying that “if you don’t take twenty wickets you won’t win a match” no you need to score runs also. We saw that in England in 2018. We saw that in South Africa in 2017 when we went there. We got 20 wickets every time but we didn’t score enough runs. But now I think we have also got the batting to be able to score more runs than Australians,” Sunil Gavaskar told India Today’s Boria Majumdar on the latest episode of Inspiration.

Virat Kohli also became the first India skipper to win a Test series in Australia. He started his captaincy stint in 2014 when he took over the reins from MS Dhoni in Test cricket who retired to give the likes of Wriddhiman Saha more opportunity. Virat Kohli has won 62 ODIs out of 89 since being captain sporadically from 2013 and has also won 22 T20Is from 37 T20Is after taking over the captaincy from MS Dhoni in 2017.

Sunil Gavaskar Says India Has Quality Bowlers And Batsman To Win Tests

Virat Kohli has led from the front in Test where he has scored 27 centuries against all countries apart from Pakistan and Zimbabwe and in ODI he has 43 centuries besides his name scoring against all Test-playing nations excluding newly introduced minnows Afghanistan and Ireland.

“This team has the attack to win on any surface. It doesn’t need any help in conditions. Irrespective of the conditions, they can win on any surface. Batting-wise there were teams in the 1980s, that were pretty similar. But they didn’t have the bowlers that Virat Kohli has.

“We have got the bowling to take 20 Australian wickets on 1 run less than what India has scored. I believe this team is the best ever Indian test team in terms of balance, in terms of ability, in terms of skills, in terms of temperament. Can’t think of a better Indian Test team,” Gavaskar added.

Among Indian pacers, Umesh Yadav was the highest wicket-taker in 2015 World Cup and has picked up 142 wickets from 45 Tests but still plays second fiddle to Mohammad Shami who has picked up 180 wickets from 49 Tests averaging 27.36 and Jasprit Bumrah who has taken 62 wickets from 12 tests. Pacer Ishant Sharma, however, spearheads the pace attack and is on the verge of completing 300 wickets and 100 Test appearances. Bhubaneswar Kumar silently performs among the bunch taking 63 Test wickets in 21 Tests.
