Want to be a professional cricketer?
The legendary Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar has picked up his Indian squad for the upcoming World Cup. He has a surprise name for the reserve opener slot.
England and Wales will host the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup from 30 May to 14 July. Every team will have to announce their final squad for the World Cup on 23 April. More than two months before the national team selection for the World Cup, Sunil Gavaskar has announced his Indian team.
The legendary Indian cricketer has already fixed his mind about the top 13 players for the World Cup. He has doubt in two places, and for those, he wants to observe the upcoming Australia series.
While MS Dhoni is expectedly his first wicketkeeping choice, Sunil Gavaskar picks up Dinesh Karthik over Rishabh Pant for the reserve wicketkeeping role. Rishabh Pant is not in Sunil Gavaskar’s World Cup squad.
Sunil Gavaskar recently told Sports Tak, “I have 13 names in my mind who will surely board the flight to England and they are Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni, Dinesh Karthik, Kedar Jadhav, Hardik Pandya, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami and Kuldeep Yadav.”
However, on Friday (15 February), Dinesh Karthik missed out the ODI squad for the upcoming home series against Australia. The selectors now want to give more time to Rishabh Pant before the World Cup selection.
Unsure about the 15th player
Talking about the remaining two names for the World Cup, Sunil Gavaskar claimed that he wanted to see the upcoming five-match home Australia series before his final decision. As the 14th player, the legend prefers the pace-bowling all-rounder Vijay Shankar.
Sunil Gavaskar added, “I think Vijay Shankar can be the 14th player. Seeing the swinging conditions in England, India can play two fast bowling all-rounders. But I am not too very sure of the 15th player. Khaleel Ahmed, Mohammed Siraj have not been that impressive. Umesh Yadav can be an option and I think selectors must keep an eye on these three bowlers.”
Sunil Gavaskar believes Dinesh Karthik can also play as a reserve-opener
Talking about the reserve-opener in the team, Sunil Gavaskar has chosen Dinesh Karthik. Though currently, Dinesh Karthik is playing in the middle-order as a finisher, in the early days, he also played as an opener for the country.
Sunil Gavaskar said, “There should be a flexibility in the team. Dinesh Karthik has opened in Test matches in the past so he can do it in ODIs too.”
India should try to win 5-0 in the upcoming ODI series against Australia
Before the World Cup, India has now left only one International assignment left. The hosts India will now play the two-match T20I and five-match ODI series against Australia from 24 February to 13 March. Sunil Gavaskar wants to see India to win the upcoming ODI series by 5-0.
The Indian legend said, “India should go out all guns blazing in the ODI series against Australia and try to win 5-0.”
The two-time World Cup-winning team India will begin their World Cup journey on 5 June against South Africa at Southampton.
