Debu Mitra is regarded as the guardian of Sourav Ganguly. Ganguly in his debut Test at the Lord’s scored hundred and later become captain of the Indian team.

In ODI cricket Ganguly scored 22 hundred and his aggressive brand of play made him famous in cricket. His cover drive was one of the most famous shots in world cricket.

It was learnt that Debu Mitra travelled with Ganguly wherever he went. But when Ganguly earned fame in international cricket, he never paid tribute to Mitra, a popular gossip in Maidans, where the Eden Gardens is located. However, Ganguly after retirement was  seen with Mitra on many occasions.

Ganguly scored more than seven thousand Test runs and more than ten thousand runs in ODI cricket.
