Former England opener Michael Atherton was once England’s most-capped Test (presently second-most) and international captain (presently sixth-most). From 1993 to 2001, he led the English team in 54 Tests, where his team managed to win 13 Tests (success rate 24.07%).

As a Test skipper, Atherton handled 52 different players (excluding himself), including 23 Test debutants. During his Test leadership period, he utilised the different playing XIs in 50 Tests.
