After winning the toss, New Zealand managed to score 619/9 decl. in the first innings. Then, India were all-out on 305 runs in their first innings.

Leading by 314 runs, New Zealand enforced the visitors to the follow-on. In their second innings, the left-handed opening batsman Gautam Gambhir showed his great temperament and patience which led him to play a marathon innings of 137 runs off 436 balls (18 fours). In that innings, Gambhir stayed in the wicket for 643 minutes.

In that same innings, the experienced VVS Laxman came to bat at the no.5 position, and at first, he put the patiently 96 runs partnership for the fourth wicket. After Gambhir was dismissed, Laxman took the next responsibility and set another 120 runs partnership for the unbroken fifth-wicket along with the left-handed middle-order batsman Yuvraj Singh.

Laxman remained not out on 124 runs off 212 balls (25 fours). His patience batting secured a draw after India batted for 180 overs in that innings, more than two days. At the end of that match, India scored 476/4 in that incomplete follow-on innings.
