England cricketer Sam Billings’s journey with Chennai Super Kings has been a learning period for him. He has grasped captaincy skills from the skipper MS Dhoni which has helped him to successfully lead the Kent.
Billings played for CSK in 2018 and 2019. He opted out ahead of the IPL 2020 auction to focus on first-class cricket after being dropped from England national cricket team.
The 29-year-old Sam Billings was recently recalled in the England team to play the three-match ODI series against Ireland.
In the first ODI, he went on to score a quick-firing half-century and set up a partnership with captain Eoin Morgan. Eventually, England won that match.
In the recent interaction, Billings opened up on his relationship with MS Dhoni.
Billings went on to heap the praise on CSK skipper’s cricket brain. He even said that there is no one better to learn from Dhoni.
Sam Billings want to play the role like MS Dhoni:
The former CSK player was the part of the yellow army’s third title victory in 2018. He said that he would always cherish the memory of being part of the winner’s team.
“I absolutely loved my 2 years at CSK,” Billings told Cricbuzz.
“The success in which the environment had consistently over the time is unmatched really, probably only Mumbai have been as consistent as CSK. To get a winners medal of the IPL is something that I really cherished.”
Sam Billings, who leads the Kent in county cricketer, learned a lot of cricket techniques from MSD. He is obliged to have experience of playing with the great Indian players and overseas players while playing for CSK.
“For me, that experience from those great players… the overseas guys but also the homegrown Indian stars. I mean, no bigger star than MS Dhoni in terms of my role that I want to fulfill,” he added.
“There is no one better than MS to learn from. For me, it was great to pick his brains and enjoy the environment he has created,” he further said.
Before starting the journey with CSK, Sam Billings played for Delhi Daredevils in 2016 and 2017.
Dhoni and Billings had one thing in common:
Sam Billings further revealed that MS Dhoni and he had one thing in common other than cricket. Both are Manchester United fans. This football love brought them closer and helped Billings to freely chat with Dhoni.
“He is a big Man United fan which really helps, as am I. He always invited me when there’s a few Man United fans around. So whenever the game was on, we used to go to his room and watch there. It was pretty cool just to talk about cricket and learn of him,” he added.
“And see how he goes about his business, whether it’s practice or games. For me, as well, my third year of captaincy at Kent, I think that’s the most incredible thing…,” Billings further said.
“How he talks to his players, especially the young players. They have the utmost respect and trust in him but he also trusts people and allows them to really thrive in the environment.”
Sam Billings has so far played 17 ODIs and 26 T20Is for England team.
