Tim Southee Expecting Better Performance From New Zealand in ODI Series

New Zealand faced another close home T20I loss against the visitors India on Sunday (2nd February) that resulted in 5-0 defeat in the five-match T20I series. However, the Blackcaps stand-in skipper Tim Southee is still confident about the team for the upcoming ODI series.

Trailing the T20I series by 4-0 before this final game of this series at Bay Oval (Mount Maunganui), New Zealand stand-in captain Tim Southee lost the toss, and they had to bowl first. Like the previous game, Kane Williamson missed this game too due to sore shoulder. However, the team is expecting that the captain Williamson will be fit ahead of the first ODI against India.

If you give them a sniff, they take it with both hands: Tim Southee said about Indian team after losing the Mount Maunganui T20I –

In the Mount Maunganui T20I, the Indian team managed to score 163/3 (20 overs) in the first innings. The hosts had a poor start as they went down to 17/3 in the fourth over.

However, the wicketkeeper-batsman Tim Seifert and Ross Taylor handled that situation very well, and they were guiding the team to the target. They built up the strong 99-run partnership for the fourth wicket which brought them into the game.

But once again, the hosts lost their grip on that match after the partnership was broken. Apart from Seifert and Taylor, other Kiwi batsmen failed to reach the 20-run mark in that innings. While Seifert scored 50 runs off 30 balls (5 fours and 3 sixes), Taylor played the knock of 53 runs off 47 balls (5 fours and 2 sixes). New Zealand finally managed to score 156/9 (20 overs) and lost that game by seven runs.

After losing the Mount Maunganui T20I, the hosts captain Tim Southee said, “It’s another close one, unfortunately on the wrong side again. If you give them a sniff, they take it with both hands. I don’t think it is a massive gap, the scoreline does suggest that, but we only need to do the smaller things better.”

The Kiwi team is now focusing on the three-match home ODI series against India, starting on 5th February 2020.

Meanwhile, Southee is confident on the team’s better performances in this forthcoming series.

He added, “The ODIs are a different format, new personnel come in and it is a format where we have done well.”

While New Zealand and India will play the first game of the ODI series on 5th February at Seddon Park (Hamilton), it will be their first ODI meeting since the semi-final of ICC Cricket World Cup 2019.
