Mujeeb Ur Rahman Is An Effective T20 Bowler And Gives Sunrisers Hyderabad Depth: Tom Moody

Tom Moody, Sunrisers Hyderabad’s (SRH) Director of Cricket, has explained the reasoning behind the team securing the services of Afghanistan spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman who was released by Punjab franchise-KXIP(now PBKS) ahead of the new Indian Premier League (IPL 2021) season.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman, who was bought for 1.5 crores at the IPL 2021 Auction in February, will have compatriots Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi for the company in the team dressing room.

Tom Moody: Mujeeb Ur Rahman Is An Effective T20 Bowler And Gives SRH Depth

Mujeeb Ur Rahman had taken IPL 2018 by storm on his way to picking 14 wickets in 11 matches averaging 20.64 for Kings XI Punjab(now Punjab Kings) at under 7 runs an over. But he wasn’t as fruitful in IPL 2019 where he picked 3 scalps in 5 games and in IPL 2020 where he went wicketless from 2 games before being released by the franchise.

“From the overseas perspective, having Mujeeb there(in the side). He is obviously a very very effective T20 bowler and he has shown that throughout his franchise career and obviously playing for Afghanistan. I think he gives us greater depth and certainly, he is going to keep everyone on their toes to you know try and keep their spot in the eleven,” explained Tom Moody while speaking to SRH.

Tom Moody said the inclusion of Mujeeb Ur Rahman adds more depth to their spin-bowling stocks and his presence will keep everyone on their toes.

SRH decided to add a third Afghanistan spinner into their team as they picked up Mujeeb Ur Rahman for his INR 2 crores base price. According to VVS Laxman, SRH also wanted to bolster their middle-order and so they bought Kedar Jadhav for INR 2 Crores.

SRH already has the likes of spinners Shahbaz Nadeem, Rashid Khan, and Mohammad Nabi in their squad, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s addition will provide them further options in their team selection.

Hyderabad acquired Kedar Jadhav, Afghanistan spinner Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Jagadeesha Suchith to their ranks. The side had bowed out of IPL 2020 in Qualifier 2 last year after suffering a loss against Delhi Capitals.

In the 2021 IPL auction, SRH was one of the quietest teams and didn’t bid for too many players. Team mentor VVS Laxman later revealed that they were targeting off-spinning all-rounders Glenn Maxwell and Krishnappa Gowtham, but couldn’t afford the duo.

Rashid Khan Is SRH’s Another Afghanistan Spinner And Will Lead Spin Attack

SRH caught everyone by surprise and raised a few eyebrows after purchasing another spinner with Rashid Khan already in the ranks. While Rashid Khan is expected to continue leading the spin attack for the Hyderabad outfit, Mujeeb Ur Rahman is only likely to feature in a limited number of games.

However, the purchase does become a lot more understandable upon realizing that SRH will play a combined nine games in Chennai and Delhi. Both pitches are spin-friendly and could tempt the ‘Orange Army’ to play two quality, overseas spinners.

The 20-year-old bowler will be featuring in his fourth IPL. Mujeeb Ur Rahman had taken his debut season-IPL 2018 by storm on his way to picking 14 wickets in 11 matches at under 7 runs an over. In his nascent 17-match IPL career, he has picked up 18 wickets averaging 33.11.

He turned for erstwhile Kings XI Punjab–now Punjab Kings– from IPL 2018-IPL 2020 but only got to play two matches in IPL 2020. SRH begins its campaign against Kolkata Knight Riders on April 11.

SRH’s squad for IPL 2021: David Warner, Kane Williamson, Virat Singh, Manish Pandey, Priyam Garg, Wriddhiman Saha, Jonny Bairstow, Sreevats Goswami, Vijay Shankar, Mitchell Marsh, Mohammad Nabi, Jason Holder, Abhishek Sharma, Abdul Samad, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rashid Khan, T Natarajan, Sandeep Sharma, Khaleel Ahmed, Siddarth Kaul, Basil Thampi, Shahbaz Nadeem, Kedar Jadhav, Jagadeesha Suchith, Mujeeb Ur Rahman.
