Tom Moody, the former Australian cricketer and SRH coach did not blame the on-field umpire for the controversial short-run decision in Kings XI Punjab’s inning against Delhi Capitals on Sunday. He wondered why technology did not intervene and said the third umpire should have made a ruling in the short-run decision.

Notably, on-field umpire Nitin Menon’s decision to call a run-short when Chris Jordan took a couple of runs off Kagiso Rabada in the 19th penultimate over while playing towards long-on area has stirred controversy. Chris Jordan’s run was adjudged not complete by the on-field umpire despite replays showing the bat had crossed the line.

Tom Moody Says The Controversial Short Run Should Not Happen When Technology Is Available

Third umpire Paul Reiffel did not intervene because he does not have the authority to do so. According to the IPL rules, a third umpire is in charge of judging no balls, run-outs and stumpings.

In case of reviews, when given out or not out by the on-field umpire, players take a call within some stipulated seconds on whether they want to challenge his decision and go to the third umpire. Tom Moody who is an Australian cricket coach, commentator and former international cricketer felt that third umpire can overrule the on-field umpire’s decision if the latter is wrong.

“Unfortunately, things like that aren’t thought through until incidents like that happen,” Moody told ESPN.

“Without a doubt, the third umpire should have made a ruling but they need to declare that that is part of the rules prior to the start of the tournament. It clearly isn’t part of the rules.”

“This shouldn’t happen with the technology available. This was a line call like a no-ball, run out or stumping we can’t afford to have these errors influencing the outcome of matches in such a competitive tournament,” Tom Moody tweeted. “The no-balls go upstairs (for review) and the third umpires are in charge of that, (same with) run-outs and stumpings.”

“But they haven’t declared that any other incidents like that (when) a third umpire can overrule an on-field umpire. Until that happens we’re not going to get the full engagement of the technology that’s available,” he concluded.

After the scores were tied at 157 runs after stipulated 20 overs, the Super Over was enforced and in the tensed situations, Shreyas Iyer’s Delhi Capitals prevailed at the Dubai Cricket Stadium. KXIP could score only two runs and lost two wickets to give DC an easy chase in the Super Over.

Tom Moody feels that since no balls, runouts and stumpings goes to the 3rd umpire for review, technology in the form of his ruling should have intervened and rules should be added where the third umpire overrules on-field umpire.

Nitin Menon’s Decision On Short Run Proved Crucial In Defeat Of KXIP

Umpire Nitin Menon’s decision on a short run in KXIP’s 19th penultimate over that was not able to be reviewed by the third umpire turned out crucial in the team’s defeat.

Mayank Agarwal then smashed three boundaries in the first three deliveries of the final over to level the scores. But Marcus Stoinis dismissed both Mayank Agarwal and Chris Jordan in the final two deliveries to send the match into the Super Over, in which Punjab handed Delhi a win by the finest of margins. But considering that one ‘short-run’ was credited to their total, Punjab would have won with three balls to spare.
