Top 5 Batsmen Who Got Out In 290s

Top 5 Batsmen Who Got Out In 290s. Getting out in the 90’s itself is heartbreaking, but falling in 290s is just an agonising pain for a batsman. For his teammates, he did the job by laying down a solid foundation and putting them in a commanding position but what about not reaching a personal milestone after being so close makes it harder to digest.

Here are 5 players who would not be too happy to find their names on this list.

During the 2008-09 England vs West Indies series, Sarwan was enjoying the form of his life while scoring 106, 94 and 107 in the first three tests. Coming into the fourth test, West Indies were already 1-0 up and England had to respond which they did stunningly by scoring 600 in their first innings. They started off pretty well with the ball too, removing Gayle cheaply but little did they know about what was waiting for them, what followed after that was a majestic inning from Sarwan.

He forged partnerships with Chanderpaul(70) and Ramdin(166) during his 291 run innings and brought his team’s score close to 600, but heartbreak soon followed when he was bowled by Sidebottom on 291.

Viv Richards was at the peak of his batting form during the 1976 series against England with scores of 232, 63, 135 and 66 in the first two tests. His form reached its pinnacle in the final test as he destroyed the English bowling line up with a thunderous knock of 291. But a lapse in concentration got him in the end but all the damage was done, as he walked down the lane to a standing ovation from the cheering crowd.

Virender Sehwag (293)

It was the final test match between India and Sri Lanka which took place during the 2009-10 season, India were already 1-0 up and were favourite to sweep the series. Sri Lanka chose to bat and were bundled out for 393. Sehwag started his innings in the only way he knows how to be fearless, he tore apart the bowling line up and broke several records during the course of his innings.

Viru ended the day on 284 and as we know a new day calls for a fresh start;  the batsman has to focus and start over again but strange things can happen and that is exactly what happened. He was out caught and bowled to Muralitharan after adding just nine to his overnight score.

Alastair Cook (294)

In 2011 Alastair Cook was going through a subdued season with the bat and his woeful performance against India in the first two tests didn’t do him any good. He had to make a statement ahead of the third Test to keep his spot and answer his critics. India were called in to bat and were bundled out for 224, in response, the English openers Strauss and Cook put up a fine opening partnership but Strauss soon departed while Cook looked in complete control hammering the Indian bowling with ease as he marched on.

He was given company by Morgan and Bresnan, in the end in order to accelerate, he fell to an uncharacteristic shot on 294. Sadly Cook was six runs short of what could have been the 6th triple hundred scored by an English batsman.

Martin Crowe (299)

One of the finest cricketers New Zealand has ever produced, He was known for his aggressive captaincy and imaginative leadership skills which were evident when he introduced spinners right from the first over and the famous pinch-hitting concept during the 1992 world cup. During the first test in the 1990-91 Sri Lankan tour of New Zealand, the black caps were unexpectedly bowled out for only 174 in their first innings, in reply Sri Lanka piled on 497 which naturally put the hosts under pressure and they had no other choice but to look for a huge total in the second innings.

It was Crowe who took the challenge and responded with a splendid knock as he safely guided his team away from danger. However, nerves got the better of him in the end as he edged part-time Ranatunga to the keeper finishing his innings on 299. He could have been the first New Zealand batsman to score 300 but it wasn’t to be, recently Brendan McCullum broke the 300 barriers when he scored 302 against India.
