England vs Ireland at Bengaluru on 2n March 2011
(Kevin O’Brien stunned everyone with the fastest century in CWC history)
It was the 15th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 (Group B). After England decided to bat first, they managed the first innings total of 327/8 (50 overs), with the help of three 50+ scores.
Chasing down that giant total, the inexperienced Irish side started to put some fight, but once they were broken on 111/5 in the 25th over. Meanwhile, Kevin O’Brien came to bat at the crease in the 23rd over. Though the required run-rate was well over 8 after the 25th over, Kevin played a fearless knock and created a special identity with his dangerous batting.
In just 17 overs, Kevin put the game-changing 162 runs partnership with Alex Cusack for the sixth wicket, where Kevin also recorded a 50-ball century – the fastest CWC century. After Cusack was run out on 47 runs, Kevin continued his batting and put another crucial 44 runs partnership for the seventh wicket with John Mooney. While Kevin was run out on 113 runs off just 63 balls (13 fours and 6 sixes) on the first ball of the 49th over, Ireland snatched a remarkable ODI victory in the next six balls without losing another wicket.
Mooney remained not out on 33 runs off just 30 balls while Trent Johnson scored 7 not out as Ireland won that match by three wickets with five balls to spare.
