It was the first meeting between India and Pakistan in any ICC tournament history. On 4th March 1992, these arch-rivals met at the Syndey Cricket Ground in the round-robin stage. After winning the toss, Indian captain Mohammad Azharuddin decided to bat first. Coming to bat at the no.5 position, Sachin Tendulkar played an important innings of unbeaten 54 runs (62 balls). Opener Ajay Jadeja also made a crucial contribution of 46 runs (77 balls). Captain Azharuddin (32 runs) and the lower-middle-order batsman Kapil Dev (35 runs) were the other Indians to cross the 30-run mark. Finally, India scored 216/7 in 49 overs.

Among the Pakistan bowlers, leg-spinner Mushtaq Ahmed (3/59) took three wickets, and the right-arm pacer Aaqib Javed (2/28) took two wickets.

In reply, Pakistan opener Aamir Sohail and the no.4 batsman Javed Miandad settled that second innings very well after they went down to 17/2. Sohail and Miandad had an impressive 88-run partnership for the third wicket that put them up in that game. However, once that partnership was broken, Pakistan batting suffered a significant collapse.

During that tensed innings, Javed Miandad‘s mocking of Indian wicketkeeper Kiran More became the most iconic moment of that match. After getting frustrated on More’s consistent appealing, Miandad once mocked him by continuously jumping inside the batting crease.

Sohail scored 62 runs (95 balls), and Miandad scored 40 runs (110 balls), but Pakistan finally failed to win that match. While once they were batting on 105/2, Pakistan was eventually bundled out for just 173 runs. India won that match by 43 runs.

Among the Indian bowlers, Kapil Dev (2/30), Manoj Prabhakar (2/22) and Javagal Srinath (2/37) took two wickets each.
