The 2007 ICC Cricket World Cup was one of the disaster periods in Indian cricket history. Rahul Dravid-led Indian national cricket team was eliminated from the first round of that tournament.

The previous edition’s runners-up (2003) India were in Group B along with Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Bermuda. In their opening match of the 2007 CWC, India suffered a shocking defeat against Bangladesh. Later, India managed to secure a giant victory against Bermuda but failed to beat Sri Lanka in the final Group Stage match.

The Indian cricketers faced massive backlashes in the nation. Some of the Indian cricketers’ families faced public harassment. Political activists of JMM (Jharkhand Mukti Morcha) attacked MS Dhoni’s house, including stone-pelting. Dhoni was playing his first Cricket World Cup, and he was playing the role of wicketkeeper-batsman.

Just a few months later, India won the inaugural ICC World T20 (2007), under MS Dhoni’s captaincy. It was only the beginning of India’s greatest period in international cricket history.
