Top Ten Cricketers Who Win Most Player Of The Match Awards In ODI

Cricketers win Player of the Match award or Man of the Match (MoM) award when their performance put a solid impact in the match. There are very lesser chances when a player wins the Player of the Match award despite his team’s defeat.

Till the date, many cricketers have won Player of the Match awards for multiple times. Here we are briefly discussing the top ten players with most Player of the Match awards or Man of the Match awards in ODIs.

10. Brian Lara (West Indies/ICC World XI) – 30 ODI MoMs

The legendary West Indies left-handed batsman Brian Lara is in the 10th position to win most Player of the Match awards in ODI history. After playing 299 ODIs, Lara won 30 ODI Player of the Match awards. He is the most ODI run-scorer as a Caribbean batsman (10,348 runs in 295 matches). In ODI career, Brian Lara scored 10,405 runs with an average of 40.48. He hit 19 centuries and 63 half-centuries in ODI career. Out of his 30 ODI MoMs, his team won 29 ODIs.

9. Kumar Sangakkara (Sri Lanka/Asia XI/ICC World XI) – 31 ODI MoMs

Former Sri Lankan wicketkeeper-batsman Kumar Sangakkara won 31 Player of the Match awards out of his 404 ODIs. In ODI cricket history, Sangakkara is the second most run-scorer as he scored 14,234 runs with an average of 41.98. The left-handed batsman hit 25 centuries and 93 half-centuries in ODI career. Out of his 31 ODI MoMs, his side won 29 times.

8. Sourav Ganguly (India/Asia XI) – 31 ODI MoMs

Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly was one of the great left-handed batsmen in his generation. In ODI history, Ganguly is the only player to win four consecutive Player of the Match awards. While he won 31 MoMs in his ODI career, his team won 28 times. He is the second most ODI run-scorer as an Indian batsman as he scored 11,363 runs in 311 ODIs (average 41.02). The left-handed batsman hit 22 centuries and 72 half-centuries in ODI career. Also, as a right-arm medium bowler, Sourav Ganguly picked up 100 ODI wickets.

7. Sir Viv Richards (West Indies) – 31 ODI MoMs

The legendary Caribbean cricketer Sir Viv Richards is known as one of the greatest batsmen in international cricket history. After playing 187 ODIs, Sir Viv Richards scored 6,721 runs (average 47.00), including 11 centuries and 45 half-centuries. Moreover, as a right-arm slow bowler, he also took 118 ODI wickets. In his ODI career, he won 31 Player of the Match awards and West Indies won all those matches.

6. Shahid Afridi (Pakistan/Asia XI/ICC World XI) – 32 ODI MoMs

Former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi was an entertaining player. His aggressive batting and brilliant leg-spin scripted many remarkable ODI victories for his team. In his long international career, Afridi played 398 ODIs where he scored 8,064 runs and also took 395 wickets. The right-handed batsman hit six centuries and 39 fifties in ODI career. Meanwhile, the leg-spinner claimed four 4-wicket hauls and nine 5-wicket hauls in ODI career. While he won the Player of the Match awards for 32 times, his team secured victories in 31 times out of those MoM matches. 

5. Ricky Ponting (Australia/ICC World XI) – 32 ODI MoMs

Former Australian World Cup-winning captain (2003 and 2007) Ricky Ponting was one of the greatest batsmen in his generation. He is the third most run-scorer in ODI history as he scored 13,704 runs in 375 ODIs (average 42.03) with 30 centuries and 82 half-centuries. Out of his 32 Player of the Match awards in ODI career, his side won in 31 ODIs.

4. Jacques Kallis (South Africa/Africa XI/ICC World XI) – 32 ODI MoMs

Former South African cricketer Jacques Kallis was one of the greatest all-rounders in international cricket history. Jacques Kallis is the most ODI run-scorer as a South African batsman. Playing 328 ODIs, he scored 11,579 runs (average 44.36) and also the right-arm pacer took 273 wickets (average 31.79). He hit 17 ODI centuries and 86 ODI half-centuries and also claimed two four and five-wicket hauls in ODI career. Kallis won 32 Player of the Match awards in his ODI career, out of which his team won 31 times.

3. Virat Kohli (India) – 32 ODI MoMs

In this top 10 list, the Indian cricketer Virat Kohli is the only active international cricketer at present. After playing 228 ODIs, Kohli has scored 10,861 runs (average 59.34), including 41 centuries and 49 half-centuries. Kohli is known as one of the greatest batsmen in international cricket history. He has won 32 ODI Player of the Match awards and out of these, India has won 31 matches. 

2. Sanath Jayasuriya (Sri Lanka/Asia XI) – 48 ODI MoMs

Former Sri Lankan all-rounder Sanath Jayasuriya was a stylish cricketer. In ODI history, Sanath Jayasuriya scored 13,430 runs in 445 ODIs (average 32.36). The left-handed batsman hit 28 centuries and 68 half-centuries in ODI career. Also, as the left-arm spinner, Sanath Jayasuriya claimed 323 ODI wickets (average 36.75), including eight four-wicket hauls and four five-wicket hauls. Sanath Jayasuriya won 48 ODI Player of the Match awards, out of which his team won 46 ODIs.

1. Sachin Tendulkar (India) – 62 ODI MoMs

The legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar is known as one of the greatest batsmen ever in international cricket history. He is the leading run-scorer in Test and ODI cricket. In his long international career, Tendulkar played the record number of ODI matches of 463 ODIs where he scored 18,426 runs (average 44.83). The right-handed batsman hit 49 centuries and 96 half-centuries in ODI career. He was also a useful bowler who bagged 154 ODI wickets. Sachin Tendulkar won the record number of 62 ODI Player of the Match awards and out of those, India won in 56 ODIs.
