Top Ten Cricketers With Their Special Birthday Achievements

Birthday is a very special day for every people. Coming out with a special performance in the cricket career on the birthday is a dream for many cricketers. Some great reputed cricketers have achieved this memorable feat with some brilliant performances.

Here we are briefly discussing the top ten players who performed impressively on their one of birthdays.

10. Stuart Broad

On his 26th birthday (24th June 2012), English pacer Stuart Broad had a great start with the ball in hand against West Indies at Nottingham. Coming to bowl as a first change bowler in the final over of the mandatory powerplay, Broad dismissed Lendl Simmons on the first ball of that over. Jonny Bairstow took a fantastic catch to dismiss that Caribbean batsman. Broad finished that match with the bowling figures of 4-0-33-1.

While West Indies managed to score 172/4 (20 overs) in the first innings, England chased down that target in 19.4 overs after losing three wickets (173/3). English opener Alex Hales scored 99 runs off 68 balls in that successful chase.

Stuart Broad played that match as a captain of the English team.

9. Colin Cowdery

Former English cricketer Colin Cowdery scored an unbeaten 51-run on his 24th birthday, 24th December 1956. It was the Johannesburg Test match between South Africa and England where Colin Cowdery scored 59 runs in the first innings of that match. His knock helped England to manage a good first innings total and later, England won that match by 131 runs.

Later, Colin Cowdery played a special innings on his 30th birthday. During the four-day practice match against South Australia at Adelaide in December 1962, MCC batsman Cowdery completed his triple-century on his birthday (24th December 1962). While he was not out on 244 runs on the day one of that match (22nd December), he scored 307 runs on the day two of that match.

8. Sanath Jayasuriya

During the 2008 Asia Cup, Sri Lankan opener Sanath Jayasuriya played an incredible innings on his 39th birthday. On 30th June 2008, during their Super Four match against Bangladesh, Jayasuriya slammed with 130 runs off just 88 balls (16 fours and 6 sixes). He had a brilliant 201-run opening partnership with Kumar Sangakkara (121 runs). Sri Lanka finally scored 332/8 in 50 overs.

Chasing down that mammoth target, Bangladesh lost their all wickets on just 174 runs (38.3 overs). Sri Lanka won that match by 158 runs.

7. Vinod Kambli

Indian cricketer Vinod Kambli played a memorable innings on his 21st birthday. On 18th January 1993, during the Jaipur ODI against England, Kambli scored his maiden international century. When India was struggling on 59/3 in the first innings, Kambli and his childhood friend Sachin Tendulkar provided an impressive unbroken 164-run partnership for the fourth wicket. While Tendulkar was not out on 82 runs (81 balls), Kambli remained not out on 100 runs (149 balls). Their partnership helped India to manage a fighting total of 223/3 (50 overs).

However, Kambli’s birthday century finally went in vain as England chased down that target in 48 overs after losing six wickets.

6. W.G. Grace

Former English cricketer W.G. Grace is known as the father of cricket. On his 22nd birthday, 18th July 1870, Grace scored 109 runs for the Gentleman against Players at Lord’s.

Seven years later, on his 29th birthday (18th July 1877), W.G. Grace scored another impressive century. Playing for Gloucestershire and Yorkshire against The Rest of England at Lord’s, Grace scored 110 runs.

On his 56th birthday (18th July 1904), Grace repeated the same glory when he was playing for London County against MCC and Ground at Crystal Palace. While he remained not out 61-run on that special day, he finally scored 166 runs in that innings.

5. Ross Taylor

New Zealand batsman Ross Taylor played an unforgettable match-winning knock on his 27th birthday. It was the Group A match of the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup between Pakistan and New Zealand at Kandy. While New Zealand mostly struggled in the first innings, Ross Taylor scored an unbeaten 131-run off 124 balls (eight fours and seven sixes) that helped New Zealand to manage 302/7 (50 overs). In the last five overs of that innings, New Zealand scored 100/2, thanks to Ross Taylor’s windy batting. Earlier, in that innings, Pakistan wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal dropped some good opportunities of Ross Taylor.

In reply, Pakistan was bundled out for just 192 runs (41.4 overs) as New Zealand won that match by 110 runs.

4. Yuvraj Singh

On his 28th birthday, 12th December 2009, the stylish Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh performed powerfully in the Mohali T20I match against Sri Lanka. At first, the left-arm spinner had the bowling figures of 3-0-23-3 as Sri Lanka managed to score 206/7 (20 overs) in the first innings.

Later, India successfully chased down that target in 19.1 overs after losing four wickets (211/4). In that time, it was the highest T20I successful chase for any team. The left-handed middle-order batsman Yuvraj Singh slammed an unbeaten 60-run off just 25 balls that helped India to secure a memorable victory. Finally, Yuvraj won the Player of the Match award for his all-round performances in that special match.

3. Jason Gillespie

On his 31st birthday, Australian cricketer Jason Gillespie grabbed the headline, not for his familiar bowling, but his incredible batting. It was the Chattogram Test against Bangladesh, where Gillespie scored 201 not out (425 balls) on 19th April 2006. Coming to bat at no.3 as a nightwatchman on 17th April 2006, Gillespie remained not out on that day on 28 runs. On the next day, he was not out on 102 runs. Till the date, Gillespie is the only nightwatchman to score a Test double-century. Unfortunately, it was Gillespie’s last international match.

2. Peter Siddle

On his 26th birthday, 25th November 2010, the Australian pacer Peter Siddle achieved a special feat. He is the only bowler in international cricket history to take a hat-trick on the birthday. On the first day of the opening match of the 2010/11 Ashes Series at Brisbane, Siddle dismissed the opener Alastair Cook, and the lower middle-order batsmen Matt Prior and Stuart Broad in three consecutive deliveries. Siddle ended that innings with the bowling figures of 16-3-54-6. However, that match ended with a draw result.

1. Sachin Tendulkar

The legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar was one of the greatest batsmen in international cricket history. On his 25th birthday, Sachin Tendulkar gifted a trophy to his nation by playing one of his best ODI innings. On 24th April 1998, during the final of the triangular tournament (Sharjah Cup) between India and Australia at Sharjah, Tendulkar played a match-winning century knock.

After Australia scored 272/9 (50 overs) in the first innings, Tendulkar scored 134 runs off 131 balls (12 fours and 3 sixes) to guide the national team to closure to the victory. Later, India chased down that target in 48.3 overs after losing four wickets (275/4).
