Sloppy running between the wickets was half the reason behind South Africa’s ouster from Champions Trophy 2017 last night. Facing India in a must-win game, South Africa slumped to just 191 runs after being put to bat first by Indian skipper Virat Kohli.
India wrapped off the chase easily and ended up knocking out the target with 8 wickets in hands. The loss not only ended their Champions Trophy hopes but also extended AB de Villiers & Co.’s desperate quest of quashing the chokers’ tag.
The high-pressure game surely got better of the Proteas more than the Indian bowling attack. There were three run outs and one stumped dismissal out of the 10 wickets that fell on the match day. This tells the story of the sloppiness with which they played against India.
Among all the misunderstanding while running between the wickets, the epic confusion between David Miller and Faf du Plessis highlighted the misery-filled day.
The incident happened in the 30th over when David Miller, the new man in, got run-out after both he and Du Plessis ended up at the batsmen’s end as a result of a confusion.
Du Plessis was the man on strike and cut a quicker one from Ashwin to the short third man region. He sets off for a quick single, but in two minds. He hesitates twice before finally coming back to the crease.
Meanwhile, Miller runs as hard as possible to reach the opposite end having already left the non-striker’s end. Jasprit Bumrah, on the hand, returned the ball in the worst possible manner but fortunately, Virat Kohli co-ordinated at the bowler’s end and broke the stumps.
The dismissal was weird in all sense as both the batsmen ended up running towards the same end.
